How many characters can you level to 50 through quests?

I don't mean solely through quests, obviously fates and dungeons will be part of the leveling process. But I expect to do quests on my first character right up until level 50. Will there be enough quests left over in other towns, to level another character in the same fashion?

No, there aren't even enough quests to do 1 character. It's close, but in the higher levels, 45+ you will probably need to run fates, or dungeon grind a bit. Or do Battle leves.

Then when you go to your 2nd job, it will be dungeons, battle leves, and the occasional fate group., 3rd job and so on is the same

They didn't design the quest system like WoW, where each zone has numerous quests and you have multiple areas to quest level 20-25, 25-30, etc here up until level 15 you have 3 areas, then they merge and stay the same.. there won't be multiple level 30 areas for questing (fates on the other hand there are but usually only 1 zone is worthwhile while the other zones are not)

Best example I can give.. if you played final fantasy 12.. it's the same. There is enough quests to continue the story but no reason to ever go back for more. Pretty much everything you do, all side-quests, still somewhat deal with the main story, the fates have the technically real side-quests, in which a fate might need help to collect herbs for his sick father, or goblins have stolen someones cargo, things like that.

If you pick up every quest you see then probably not. I'd suggest levelling up your first level 50 class only doing the main storyline, class quests and sub quests from the region/area of your starting city. Then when you go to level your second class (hopefully from another starting city) you have all the class quests and sub quests for that area and so on. This will help you get two other classes well on their way but after that it is the grind of dungeons and so on (remember dungeons now actually are much more useful than fates and you get loot).

You can level as many characters as you want, as everything is reset if you create a new character.

If you meant levelling other classes then no, you only have enough quests to get to 50 on one class. But with the addition of dailies for level 42+ and all the bonus experience to be had in the Roulette, it's not that bad at all. Add to those things each class's hunting log, a couple of FATEs here and there when you chance upon them, and the dungeons and you can reach 50 without too much hassle. It definitely beats the FATE grinding from before.

You also want to pick up any sidequests that unlock features of the game. For instance, there's a level 15 quest (Color Your World) in Western Thanalan that unlocks the ability to dye armour, a level 30 quest (My Feisty Little Chocobo) in the South Shroud that unlocks the ability to have your chocobo fight with you, etc. The problem is that the game interface itself doesn't highlight these quests to indicate they're any more significant than other sidequests.

(At least it doesn't highlight them as special when they're available. It does actually highlight them when they aren't available. Most regular sidequests just don't show up at all until you're at the right level and have progressed enough in the main story to unlock them. Significant ones will show up with a red unavailable quest icon before you can do them. But then once they're unlocked, they get the same icon as any other normal sidequest. So finding the important quests is a matter of remembering where those red unavailable quest icons used to be.)

The new beastman quests start at 42 and are repeatable. You can do 6 a day. Those can help you get through the 40s up to 50 if you need a little exp between levels.
