Especially when people start trying to game the system and boost their ilevel by using gear that has no benefit for them, yeah, been seeing that a bunch lately.

The system imposed ilvl was kinda needed. People just aren't going to survive Titan HM with 2800 HP.
Also, the ilvl requirements SE put in even seem jacked up. I want to see a video of a full party of i67 people take down Titan Ex.
Uhhh no you couldn't. Gear in FFXI meant just as much, if not more, than it does in this game.
I don't think you understand just how incredibly important gear is. Yeah yeah, skill > gear, but gear is very important. It doesn't matter how skilled you are if your ilvl is so low that you simply can't reach the required output for any given fight. When you know nothing about a person other than the gear they're wearing, the one with higher ilvl is always the safer bet. Always. Not sometimes. Not occasionally. Always.

This is fine, if a fight has specific requirements. Say- you have to have 4000 hps to survive a mechanic. Getting kicked or excluded on this basis makes sense. It's not offensive, and is practical.[COLOR=blue]I don't think you understand just how incredibly important gear is. Yeah yeah, skill > gear, but gear is very important. ILevel is a generic number that is a catch-all dumbed down evaluation point. It's a mindless 1:1 comparison for a one-size-fits-all intellectually lazy mentality.
No, it doesn't require you to actually look at gear to see that your healer is wearing int jewelry to cheat the score (I've seen that). No, it doesn't require that you make sure that your tank is wearing appropriate stats... it is just a go to number that a mindless person looks at and says X > Y? OK!
It's a complete and utter watering down of a gear system, distilling out any potential sophistication, thoughtfulness, or diversity into a single easy to consume number.
Yes, gear matters. I don't dispute that. What I dislike is a one-dimensional system that might as well be wearing stat tokens that each have a value. Why bother with multiple stats? Why not JUST have an Ilevel?

I base good players on how much commendation they have received . Most good players are tanks and healers. There are a few good players who are DPS but they are few and far between .
I've been in quite a few parties lately via Party Finder for Primal Ex's or Hard Instances that have requested that all recruits be ilvl80+ and "not suck" at the game. Despite the great gear most players in the party had, it ended up in epic failure many times.
So yes, OP is correct. Gear doesn't necessarily make you a great player - just helps reduce your damage and increase your DPS. It does not save you from your inability to recognize when to dodge specific actions from a boss, determine when to time your actions properly, or if you're stealing aggro.

It's a hard sell, though.
In this game, the only way to differentiate yourself is through gear. People strive for gear to prove they are good.
Saying that higher level gear does not mean you are good invalidates the reward system and offends those motivated by it.
Afterall, if it is someone's goal to be "the best"... and there is no way to prove it or lord it over others for self esteem- then what is the carrot that keeps them on the hamster wheel? It kind of falls apart.
People used to stand in Rev Toll with relic weapons out- to "show off"... now everyone has them and people say they are "freebies". No one stands around with them anymore. Gotta feel special somehow!

33% gear, 33% skill, 33% power of will... and 1% of luck. ^^
A person with full myth and no allagan is trash. Needs to have more than 2 pieces of allagan equipped to be good.
