I watched Happy Days in my own younger years (Mid/late 80's), but I did not know that reference either.
(Even though I do remember that episode.)

I can assure you 'jump the shark' is NOT a common phrase in Germany. at all.
I did know the origin. I knew the phrase.
I knew it in English. it does not exist in German. just because a phrase catches on from a show in one country, doesn't mean the same happens in other countries, especially when it's countries where a show gets dubbed first and it takes months - or back then - YEARS before the show is even shown. in fact, the episode aired over here when the show was long since cancelled in the USA
