Yes, thisPS3 limitations.
And it was really lame running for 1-2 minutes with no mobs or anything between "zones". Just because there were no loading screens didn't make it better, it just made everyone want to level a gatherer class for the speed boost ability they could get when far away from nodes and use it to just run places lol (pre chocobos).
or an archer, to get the skill Quicken ^^
The interesting thing though is that I always found wandering through FFXI landscape to be much more unique and interesting to look at compared to 1.0's more bland style. Even with its graphical limitations, there are still zones in XI that I think were just designed so well, and still look pretty today.

"Well, it's no Vana'diel, but it'll have to do..."
Bump maps, or normal maps are special textures that hold normal vectors. Instead of each pixel being RGB being a color, each pixel holds a XYZ coordinate for the normal. An example:

or from someones glitched FFXIV (not suppose to happen, but here is an example)

So what does this help you with? Well "diffuse lighting" (light from a light source onto a surface, that get's bounced off) is the dot product between a normal vector and the light vector, times whatever color was sampled from your actual texture (to lighten/darken it). Basically... the larger the angle between the two vectors, the darker it becomes (it's not facing the light), and the smaller, the brighter. Normally the normal vector is perpendicular to the surface, BUT you can fake that normal, and save it into a texture; the bump/normal map. So now when it is fed into a light shader, the texture begins shading itself even though you didn't add any polygons! An example is the stitching on our armor or belt buckles. The most common use is brick and stone walls.

People keep blaming the PS3 for limitations to the size of zones (well actually, they blame the PS3 for pretty much all limitations) but keep ignoring that they also wanted the game to run on low-end PCs too.
Not True Mine ran Pretty good! The Combat and content sucked! 1.0 wasn't bad too much It need some sum stuffed Ironed out!
Also Note You can build a Good PC for under 800 usd! It will smoke anything 98% of the time!
no the trouble is directly link to the memory of the ps3 (256mb) go find a low-end pc with this much... i wait ^^ you will find at worst 2-4go...
the loading was put because of this. why the zone are this small? for give them true identity with less repetition of the zone like we had in the v1.
having huge empty area is not that good...seriously.
Theres either lack of open world areas or just making zones bigger. This can be fixed.
1 Main issue is the game loads all of the zone. Can see this when you fall through the ground. Things can be cut down to save on PC/PS3 preformance.
1.0 had same issue were we would load ocean water under the hole zone.
Because a common criticism of 1.0 was that much of the "Open world" was copy pasted. Which was true. So zones were made smaller so SE could focus on making them unique and well made rather then using the same 5 areas over and over again. It has nothing to do with the PS3.
1.0 Players: "This sandwich that is three arms long and is made of shite tastes bad. You should change the shite."
Squee: "Okay! Here, have this one which has no shite on it but is also the size of a thumb."
ARR Players: "That was delicious! But very, very short."
White Knights: "Oh, but you ASKED for this! Do you want the shite again?!"
False dichotomy is false.
It's not a battle between "huge repetitive zones" and "small unique zones". It's a battle between squee not wanting or being unable to put "huge" and "unique" together in the same sentence.
didn't read all 14 pages, but it was stated before Beta that they made more zones/instances and loading screens to accommodate more players who cannot afford High End PCs. To play 1.0 effectively you would have to spend near a G on a nice PC.
