Two reasons. The first one is PS3 limitations. The second one is that the old zones were very repetitive and parts of zones were copy and pasted multiple times

i think the reason for the smaller worlds was so the computer could render the area your in which keeps the process quick (with the loading screen acting as the rendering time) where as a open world usually uses a render circle around the player model which for programming i be leave it is easier to do on a single player game and could cause issues in multiplayer games, but if you use guild wars as an example they have wide open spaces while maintaining zones but when that zone is full of players it causes server issues and lag issues, as for the texture i think it was changed to fit the slightly different art style.. i don't know
TL;DR: the smaller zones are to stop lag and issues with the servers and low to medium spec computers (ps3 is considered medium spec), for textures i aint to sure might be for art style
EDIT: a lot of well informed people got in before i did![]()

Someone doesn't remember Gridania in the original
I still can't grasp how people can say 1.0 overworld was amazing with a straight face, did they only play for 5 minutes? The terrain way copy pasted to hell and way back over and over and over, caves? They were the same freaking cave turned around with three freaking moles in them, ramps in Thanalan? the whole section was copy pasted for every ramp, it was horrible and anyone who says 1.0 overworld is better than 2.0 either didn't play or barely touched 1.0 and didn't notice it.
Just a little reminder of what La Noscea was like back then.

That shit was EVERYWHERE.
Or they just prefer an actual expansive overworld you could actually explore instead of a claustrophobic corridor hubworld cluttered with static meshes and npcs copy-pasted every 2 feet.
That shit is EVERYWHERE.
With cheap teleports to any zone, and instant teleports to dungeons, there isn't even a reason to traverse the terrain anyway!
Just sit in the lobby... err I mean "city" doing dungeons.
He doesn't mind us conducting trials so close to his bazaar, so long as he's properly compensated... Yes, Portus, we pay him in sorcery-blasted bird flesh. - Cocobygo
Explore exactly what? copy pasted terrain you see every 20 steps? lol.
