Tanks need to know the fight before hand or they will get the most hate from others. They are responsible for pulling and positioning. Also they need to be the most geared to absorb damage. Healers for the most part, can just basically react and heal.
Generally bosses hit hard. That is what makes the tank important. The role is to literally soak damage so no one else does, you can't honestly think people don't play it because of responsibility or any of that garbage, right? The only role with any ACTUAL responsibility is the healer, and even then the responsibility only exists because you have one job. Everyone has one job. It's not some magic thing where suddenly tanks and healers do more work than any other member of the team.
Everyone is responsible for positioning. Everyone should know the fight before hand, the amount of hate a role gets is irrelevant.Tanks need to know the fight before hand or they will get the most hate from others. They are responsible for pulling and positioning. Also they need to be the most geared to absorb damage. Healers for the most part, can just basically react and heal.
I have yet to read any reason as to why tanks have more responsibility than any other role. Every reason I've been given applies to every other role except pulling, and I'd imagine eventually there will be situations where the tank pulling will be dangerous. Not now, but eventually. I could also be entirely wrong, but then pulling isn't really hard, but I couldn't argue against it.

They should but you can get away with it more often than not with other roles.
