The first thing they should do is remove retainers from the market board, and have the player post directly the items. The current system keeps all sorts of junk listed on the market boards due to the way in which retainers re-list items every time you access that retainer. This is a worthwhile first step, seeing as you would need to do it before ever implementing a listing fee.

Didn't read everything, but I really like the idea of a listing fee to prevent people from changing prices every 5 minutes.
Just remove tax from a sold item and use that as listing fee. And get rid of the different taxes/fees per nation.
If the item doesn't sell after a certain time, return the item and the listing fee.

Or limit item listing to, for example, 6 hours. So you put up an item for sale and can't take it out or change price for 6 hours.

I also don't see where the problem with fees would be. You need a few thousand gil to be able to either put something expensive or many cheaper things for auction.
If people don't have that kind of money, how can they repair their gear, or buy materials?
    I don't see a problem there.
You wouldn't lose money. If you sell something now, you have to pay a tax. Paying before or after someone purchases your item makes little difference if you don't sell 40 items for 100k each.
And if you do, I'm sure you have the money to back it up.

Here is the problem with the whole idea. What happens you you call your retainer? That is right, you no longer have anything listed for sale from that retainer. When you call it, you get a message saying "You are no longer selling items on the market". What you propose would only work in games like GW2, FFXI, etc with real auction houses. Until they rework the whole retainer market board system, you won't see this implemented. The sad part, they are not even listening to us, at all, not one, damn, bit. I have seen many of these, and no one from SE has anything to say on this matter. Not that I have seen anyways, and I would love if someone could prove me wrong.

To me, the biggest problem (other than too many sellers and not enough buyers) is that the current system favors newly listed items over older listed items. Because each player who comes along to list their item can see the exact asking price and undercut everyone with little risk, it's basically a last-in-first-out system. Adding a listing fee only exacerbates this situation. If I list an item when there are none up for sale, and 5 other people then list it after me, everyone but the last player to list has to pay the listing fee again if they want to have a competitive price.

They should have done an auction system similar to XI instead of the market board. But instead of selling the lowest price automatically for the full purchase price, the system should sell the oldest listed item that still meets the buyer's price.

I'm selling an item I crafted for 25k. Other items with similar material costs are selling for 10k. If someone undercuts me by 1g, I can return the favor - whatever, nbd.

If there were a listing fee, I'd probably just drop my price to 10k - which is still profitable - and hope the undercutter moves on to making and selling something different, and I can go back to selling at 25k.

IMO listing fee = MUCH GREATER undercutting

To the OP, no, No, NO, NOOOOOOOOOO, a THOUSAND TIMES NO. Listing fees were a bitch in FFXI and I shouldn't be punished because others are too stupid to sell things at a profit.

You know what I think it is, my friend had this problem and since this game is 95% noobs then they probably are making the same mistake, he didn't even know that selling things to an NPC was even an option. He just thought that the marketboards were the only option. That would explain all these idiots that sell things for the lower or the same price as the NPC. In fact, most try to make a "profit" by increasing the price by 1 gil more than the default price, but they never consider the % you lose when you sell something. So those making 1 gil off your cheap items, if it reaches 20 gil in price, then your 1 gil profit is lost to selling fees. It's common sense people, just your brains, THINK. lol, telling people to think, that's like telling a dog to fly, it just isn't going to happen. lol

I agree that a listing fee hurts poor players - its not tough to envision that a up-front fee could actually prevent someone who's broke from selling something.

What about, instead of a listing fee, a much more painful fee on price adjustment? Say, 10% of the new charge every time you chance the price on an item you have up, combined with a cool down that would lock you out from selling something, for say 1 hour, if you just took that item off your board.

How about deducting the tax if an item is taken off the market? At the moment the tax is deducted at the point of sale, which should remain, but if you cancel the items, the tax should be deducted regardless.

Works the same as placing an initial listing fee.

    This was your second reply.

Your second reply clearly implied you could not see your own flaw in your logic. So I drew it out for you.

I'm going to have to draw this out for you if you can't seem to see the flaw in your logic.

Now if my statement was indeed meant to be patronizing, I would have not gone thru the entire trouble of trying to help someone understand their own flaw with equations.
