On my server, market board prices are between 10-40% the value of the Allagan coin reward. (high quality stuff is considerably more, but, why bother with high quality when you're only going to be using the gear for 3-4 levels anyways?)

    Example:

I finish a quest. I can either get a piece of scale mail armor, or 3000 gil (6 silver allagan coins).

If I hop on the market board, a piece of scale mail armor is going for 300-600 gil.

I've yet to encounter a quest reward item (outside of untradeable ones of course) that is going for more on the market than the coin reward.

And besides, why take the quest reward when in 3-4 more quests you're going to gain access to a new dungeon that is going to have gear that is better than the quest reward stuff anyways?

EDIT: I took the "item" option up until about level 15 (prior to gaining access to dungeons)... after that, I've accepted nothing but Allagan pieces and have had no problems with any of the content. Just make sure you're running your daily roulette every day and rolling for gear that your class can use. The few times I've had to buy gear because stuff wasn't dropping after multiple dungeon runs, I've been able to get it for under 1000 gil (lvl 35-42 stuff)
