yep if its a mistake on ur end then just deal with it. if its due to an in game bug, im pretty sure they'll refund u regardless of the 1 time per lifetime policy

maybe allowing these kinda of mistakes would be a good use of paid services..
maybe about $5-10 to recover an item within 2 days. Subject to game master approval still. the fee simply justifies the use of a game masters time. its low enough to allow you to get things back, but high enough to discourage constant abuse
i too have never made a mistake like this, but like someone said, we are human, it would be nice to have some way fix these things if we should make a mistake. It can happen. it it can happen more than once.

What are you tossing in the game to need item restore more than once? Maybe once a year would be good. But I don't see how people are needing this service in FFXIV. Maybe people are going through all the discard menus cause I think it ask you twice if you want to discard. And if people are Materia Ass. their gear that is penta melded by mistake then they need to learn and take their time.
This.
It's not like restoring items takes effort... a Certain MMO has the process practically automated for certain cases (vendored and disenchanted items). You get three restores every 30 days there, and I certainly can't think of anyone who abuses it.
This is a game. It's not some place where people should feel the need to get on their mighty high horses and demand that some person who made a mistake "deal" with it or "learn" from it or whatever. Mistakes happen, even to the most careful. There's no point in punishing people for it in a game.
Also, all those people using the 1-time-item-restoration-thing to get a Fantasia Potion reimbursed make me laugh so hard... or for a piece of Darklight stuf... lulls

As MMO's don't have a save feature (so you can restore yourself) I've always double checked before tossing stuff or buying expensive items and as such never needed a restore in years of online playing. One restore is more than enough in my opinion, people just need to be more careful.
A genuine glitch is a different matter and shouldn't be treated as a restore.

There is the option from the developers side to allow items purchased from vendors to be traded back for full point refund within x time limit, completly removing the need for them to worry about item restore and allowing players to do it themselfs. Seeing how buggy this ui is you sometimes get the wrong item upon purchase. Blizzard used to do item restore and item trades for players its one of the reasons they added this mechanic to their game so that the player base could trade items dropped in dungeons if someone rolled need by mistake, or if you purchased the wrong item from vendor. 2 hour limit to refund item or trade. Now FF would have to do it different since they dont allow trade in dungeons. But they could allow the players to refund items for the points within a said time.

It shouldn't, but even with the well-known glitch that was causing people to buy Valor Coronet when they clicked on Thavnairian Mist (the two items are in different tabs, so it's very unlikely to be user error), SE tells these people that they have to either eat the loss or use their one-time restore to fix this.
After the number of posts I saw about this, I bought my Mists one at a time as soon as I had the 300 myth, so if I clicked too fast and it tried to buy something else, it would fail.

The one time restore is fine, this game is so full of confirm boxes that you really need to have an immense brainfart if you want to drop something of great value or buy the wrong item.
Apart from that, at this point there is not a single item in this game which takes long to get.
Just pay attention and don't play under influence of alcohol or drugs.
Felis catus
I've never needed an item restored in any MMO I've played.
How incompetent or dishonest is someone to need a whole bunch of them?
