Yeah I was gonna say this. I assumed the current client has 1920x1080 textures (even if ps3 only shows them at sub-720p, still) and the fact ps4 is only 1080p for gaming, why would they be getting higher res textures?
Because the current client is DX9 it's using far more than it needs to use to get this level of graphics. Think of it this way.
On DX9 we need 1000 units to get these graphics.
On DX11 we'll only need 600 to get the same graphics. And the extra 400+ will allow even more/better things.
Anyways @OP they said it'll be about 6 months after PS4 retail release of XIV.
Well, that's not really how it works. the engine can handle textures of almost any size but they are generally square and powers of 2 (e.g. 1024x1024, 2048x2048, etc.) The resolution applied depends on the use of the texture. some pixelation on larger characters when you have very small ones is expected because the textures are being made from the same source art. BUt not only that, different textures applied to the same models may have different resolutions, depending on the level of detail needed. You don't want to use a higher resolution than is really necessary because that requires more memory. THIS is why the resoltution on some textures/materials is limited, for efficiency/performance reasons. Those factors don't go away just because a system supports DX11. The main benefit to DX10/11/12 is improved performance of certain effects and new graphical effects that don't exist in 9.0c.Yeah I was gonna say this. I guess there are more people here that actually understand computers than just me. I should probably start being more specific from now on lol. I used 1920x1080 as the example because (like my previous sentence) I just assumed most people hadn't a clue.
Gomen!
what a lot of people don't know is even XI's engine could handle such large textures. The reason it doesn't have them all over the place is purely because of memory limitations. Yes the PC has plenty (and they should have offered an upgraded texture pack on the PC) but on the PS2 they had to conserve memory wherever possible.
PS4 and FFXIV is a pretty big deal in Japan. Resources are much better spent on that than giving PC gamers prettier graphics. How do I bussiness?
By putting out a contract to some freelance artists for higher resolution textures. I mean look at the TES modding community along with the plain strange and nude mods, there is a thriving high detail model and texture mods out there, and these are usually made by one extremely talented person per mod. You're telling me that SE a company that is making more revenue from their other endeavors than their own developed games can't afford to higher a few more extra artists? Its not like this game has any real variety when it comes to armor, the majority being either complete reskins or slightly reworked reskins.
they said there there engine didnt support DX11 so they either going to wait till its upgraded or change what there using now. i say dont hold your breath for DX11.
PS4 limitations coming soon.
