It's really funny seeing the random in the group beg/threaten for a commendation when everyone else in the group went into the dungeon/guildhest together.

I agree it's kinda pathetic, but the problem is, many of them are doing it because they know some people don't even bother with it/think about it, so by asking, they have a chance of getting the "Whatever" votes.
"Ul'dah can keep their dusty markets, and their streets paved in silver and gold.
Limsa Lominsa keep your pirates, and your ships covered in musty mold.
My loyalty lies with Gridania, with the Moogles and the tree spirits of old." -The Forky Conjurer
I've earned most of my marks as a paladin or scholar, but the few I earned as a summoner I earned. Mostly cause of saving the group if the healer was off in lala land.
Begging for a commendation is just ... pathetic. But I also see how heavily skewed the system is towards tanks and healers. They get the majority of the commendations, because without them the party couldn't progress. DPS rarely get noticed in that same light. And yet... without the DPS the party can't really kill much, either. Oh, sure, the healer could DPS and the tank puts out some damage, but it'll certainly take them a lot of time and effort.
I only have Bard at level 50, so I don't get as many as I probably could have if I played a healer or tank, but sometimes I do get one or even two during a group. I usually give mine to the other DPS in my group, unless he was just ... horribly undeserving lol
I find I get a lot while doing dungeons as a low level lancer, funny enough (still trying to get to 34 for a cross-class skill, but I loathe melee classes). I guess being able to stay out of the bad and doing respectable damage goes a long way.

Actually, DPS are very likely to receive most of their commendations from the healer simply because, while the tank and other DPS are focused on the mob(s) 90% of the fight, the healer is focused on the party 90% of the fight. This puts the healers in the best position to judge player performance. Out of all the commendations I've given so far, half of them have gone to DPS jobs that I've seen go above and beyond their role (you can easily tell the fate grinders apart from the dungeon runners in how well they know their class and how well they can pick out situations which require more support than facerolling damage)

Starting to see this more and more as of late. Today someone kept on reminding throughout the whole dungeon to 'Give out commendations at the end of the run' obviously hinting that they wanted them. First unwritten rule for me is that if you beg or hint about them, you're not getting any from me.
Me and my friends queued for AK, we're a group of 1 tank, 1 healer and 1 dps so it's pretty much instance queue on which ever 4 man level 50 instance we queue for. We got into AK and the other dps (not sure how long he/she had wait for), start advertising which rewards you'd get for a certain amount of commendations and hinting that he/she wants it because the gold mount looks cool. Not that we can vote anyway since we were a group, but we all left and got into another AK straight away. Wasn't sure how long the other dps had to wait again.

I haven't seen any begging, just one person who made a comment about how he'd appreciate them at the end but he didn't get my vote because he wasn't very good.
I'm not farming them or anything and I think I only have 28 so far but it does surprise me sometimes how people vote. As a BLM I've had some great runs and got nothing, then in WP a few days ago I had my biggest derp moment in many years as while not looking at the screen (was looking at my keyboard while typing) I hit auto run by accident and did a full on accidental Leroy Jenkins by the first boss room. I said sorry at the time, and again at the end and left the dungeon with 3 recommendations, go figure.
