You can perform fairly well with lower level gear, provided you upgrade the correct pieces first.

That's because the most important piece of gear for a DD is the weapon. You can get a lot more of a performance increase from simply getting an 80 weapon over full DL/90 gear. I've done lots of testing on a few different jobs on dummies. Full i90, full DL, AF with everything else i90, DL with relic+1 and so on. For example, I get 310ish DPS on dragoon in full i90 (set #1), 260 dps with full AF, lvl 70 accessories and relic+1 (set #2), and 260 dps with full i90 and a garuda's weapon (set #3). It was a difference of 60 some odd strength between Sets #1/3 from set #2, not to mention a few weeks of work but 2 and 3 performed equally.

I guess my point is that you can get 240-250 dps by getting relic and full AK gear (under optimal circumstances) which is plenty for any content that isn't a dps check (there is very little of these). It's just a matter of people knowing how to get those numbers, not the gear, that is preventing it.

I bet I could beat the entirety of CT in nothing but AF1 (imo: the LV50 Default Gear) and Ifrit's Claws with accessories to push my ilvl up to 55.

It would be a challenge, but it's very doable. If CT required full DL, its ilvl would be set to 65 or 70. Not 55.

The folks who perform the worst at CT are, as has been said, the ones who simply don't know the fights. The amount of damage the bosses put out is no greater than the damage put out by WP/AK bosses. I walked into some of Acheron's lesser AoEs on purpose just to see how much damage I would take. In full DL as a MNK, I took maybe 1/7th-1/8th of my bar worth of health, which isn't that bad at all. I figure, if someone was in AF1, that'd equate to 1/4-1/3 of their bar at the most. Dangerous, but not life-threatening. If they knew the fight, you could wear the crappiest armor possible while still keeping yourself at ilvl 55 and still win.

... Don't know how you've had a bad run in CT. I've done it at least 20 times and never had 1 not clear. Sure there are smooth runs, and rocky runs, but all of them cleared it.

Secondly, if SE wanted it done in full DL they would have made the entry IL requirement 70, not 61 or w/e it is.

Last night I made a premade for CT where we all carefully wore as much holiday gear as possible while still meeting the ilvl requirement. Not only did we win a few of the dps "races" but I also picked up and held the giant without any problems during KB when the full +1 geared OT died to a meteor.

Moral of the story, just have an idea of what you're doing and you'll be fine queuing for whatever you want. Then sit on all the super geared dead people once the smoke clears.

I ran CT with my husbands lvl55 PLD the first night it came out. Everyone was nice, no one knew what to do, and crazy, we had fun!

Flash forward one week and its nothing but trolling, flaming, no one talks until AFTER something goes wrong and only to call people retards or whatever insult they prefer, everyone rushes in, etc.
    Bold emphasis mine.

This happens not only in CT, but in every single piece of content in this game. Back in launch week when we tried the hard mode primals? Same. Two weeks later if you miss a stun as PLD you're a noob. "First time in Garuda" and nobody says a word until you are in the wrong position, then they ask, "you don't know where to go?"

One month after launch, all BC runs require everyone to read up on strategy.

Fast forward to 2.1. The day after patch, people were already asking for experienced party members.

I think encounter design is the key source of these attitudes. The encounters in this game are static, there are no dynamic factors to the fights. So the more we do them, the more of a chore they become, and we want to just get them over and done with, so we get the fat shinys quicker. That means less tolerance for mistakes, less tolerance for anything that may deviate from our "known success strategy". It also means not wanting to accommodate people with lower iLvs.

But I guess that's just what a game that caters to the masses will end up with. There's no avoiding it, because those kind of attitudes get rewarded in a game (you get your goal quicker and more efficiently), and the attitude itself becomes contagious.

but most noobs fail at that too.

Considering this thread, you must be a n00b. Listen to the people and stop being a n00b.

The main problem with CT is that I can't vote-kick the guys that keep shouting and harassing in the Alliance channel from other parties.

Hey guys! How about we use Party Finder to run rookie-friendly runs through content? The elitist hotheads can stew in their flaming cesspool of rage, I want to run with a bunch of friendly rookies who want to learn the strategy without being a buncha whiny brats.

    Who's with me?
