The Mix and Match Club (Materia and Fashionable Gear)

This stems from the current thread started by someone who is upset that people prefer to look good over having awesome stats.

I have a proposal that I believe the Materia system can implement into the game.

Currently stats do not matter, but in the future they should after all the rebalanced and combat changes go into effect. When that happens obviously people will start taking a greater look at the stats of gear over the looks of gear. This will upset certain players. Especially people like me who prefer looks over stats. We don't intentionally gimp ourself into unplayable gear sets but we tend to mix and match gears that look good while giving us at least some beneficial stats, bu these stats may not be on par with the hardcore min-maxers.

The simple Idea is to allow us to chose fashion and stats together. The Materia system could easily allow this.

A User prefers the appearance of a certain item. Fashionable Coatee. But the stats given with this item do not reflect well with this players Class of Gladiator.

On the other hand the Defenders Haubergeon has the stats and appearance most people prefer for Gladiators, but this player is irked by and uncomfortable with its appearance for their own reasons. These reasons are theirs and we are not here to debate them.

To counter this the Materia system enables a player to take the stats from one armor The Haubergeon, and force them onto the other armor the Coatee.

The Player thus either fights through raising the AP on the Haubergeon and converting it themselves or finding someone who likes the Haub and continuously converts them over for profit to acquire the Materia for the Defenders Haubergeon.

Once they have the Materia they can use a specific catalyst to pound it into their Coatee or find a crafter to do it for them. Using special catalysts as a way to differenciate "Replacing" the stats on the gear or just "Boosting" the stats on the gear.

The Coatee can now reflects the same stats that the Haubergeon had, the old stats being over-written by the Materia being grafted on with its special stat converting catalyst.

The Secondary Slot Materia then gives only the option of boosting only some stats or skills instead of converting the original stats of the gear.

Would this satisfy most players? I do believe it would.

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.

Many MMO have separate equip screens for fashion accessories and whatnot, so you can have your main gear for stats and something else for looks.

Personally I don't care how my character looks as long as they have optimal stats, but given the choice I would probably take advantage of a system that allowed for both.

Added the comments about special catalysts so crafters can differentiate using the first slot for converting the equipments stats or just boosting its base stats.

I want to like that idea, but the example seems a bit extreme to me. Fighting side by side with melee fighters in coatees and canvas vests just would feel too off lol.

But I do agree that "materia" can lessen the burden and assist people who want to look a certain way and be effective. Say mr haubergeon, crafted from skilled metalworkers, this is a great pick up and go piece of armor. Solid stats, set in stone, not much else to do. But other options, say armor that drops from NMs and the such, could have weaker base stats, look completely different, and have many empty slots for your liking. Then you can cram the materia you want for stats you favor into a piece of armor that you enjoy looking at. It'd be a lot more work, but you'd also potentially end up with a stronger piece that houses your personal style and stats.

Personally I hope that NM and UU Gear can't be used for Materia Conversion only for having materia grafted to it. but thats a economic balance issue.

I like the idea that would provide the players with more choices.

I am in 2 minds about equipment fashion slots. Personally I like to see tanks in tin cans, mages in robes and coatees and DPS in whatever gear reflects their class. Fashion slots would encourage endgame tanks to play in Weathered gear and egg helms, and as funny as it might be to start with, it would quickly get annoying, and start to feel like everyone is just trying to look as silly as possible. I am not an RPer, but this would be a little too far out of immersion for my liking.

Just my 2c though, im sure Peregrine will swoop in and have a sheetstorm at me in 5 about how this opinion supports botting and also advertises my want to eat babies or something.

I think this comes down to your likes versus the person playing their character.

I personally don't like the look of Haubs and "tin can" gear even on classes that should be in it full time. I've always preferred the Leather bikini style of warriors like Red Sonya.

oh forsure. I'd rather the demand stay with crafted gear in as many ways as possible, and NM gear be something you hunt once and then it continues to grow with you. Thus crafters remain important and relevant, and keeps NM "hunting" in the realm that the demand for them doesn't turn it into NM "camping".
