I used to think I didn't need it at all, and that my strength as a warrior was more than enough to take and trade aggro with a fellow paladin. That is, until I got to coil, in which trading aggro between each other was absolutely required. With the slew of new content we have now where two tanks are required(the extreme primals and Ultima hard mode, along with crystal tower), I cannot imagine going without it. It's just too good to pass up, even in cases where there is no second tank. It also has considerable range, so it's useful to pull stuff off of people at a much greater distance than normal for those particular emergencies.

As necessary as a White Mage to have Swiftcast.

As said before when you get into 8 man content it's pretty important.

Pretty much required for coil. Especially T2 unless you're Enraging it.

If you're main tanking CT you'll want provoke when you become a "Ghost" to attack the boss otherwise he'll run around following the last tank. Pain in the arse when someone doesn't provoke it off you.

Even if you get stunned and lose hate a quick provoke with tomahawk will get you back on track.

Anything that requires a tank swap then you'll need Provoke. I levelled a WAR first and didn't see why I'd need it but after getting it I use it all the time!

Provoke is pretty useful, and I agree that Warriors should have it as a primary skill, not as a cross skill. It's confusing that basic skills for roles are missing from jobs. FFXIV is balanced for cross skills, but if players don't know that, they won't realize that they're missing important skills.

Some skills should be available based on the role (dps, tank, heal) while other skills vary based on the class and job. For example, all dps and healers should have threat dump skills, tanks should have interrupt and taunt, and healers should have a big emergency heal on a cooldown. All dps should also be able to choose between a single target and an aoe LB, instead of only having one type of LB depending on the class. Etc.

Glad to know Provoke is actually worth something later on. So far it has been a worthless skill on both my Glad and War because it is pathetic. On the few times I use it and follow up with a throw or Halone I still don't actually get the aggro because god forbid the players have a dot on the mob. I would have liked to see provoke work more like other games so that for a couple of seconds the aggro is locked on you regardless.
The fact its only real purpose seems to be for tank swap kind of suggests the skill needs a bit of work

That would be too easy. Now you have to have some synergy with the group. When you provoke, it puts you +1, so either have BB/RoH pre-charged, or have dps or other tank stop for one attack. Can't go wrong there.

If provoke was just a button press and nothing more to it, then it would be a worthless skill.. There has to be some in-depth.

It is a perfect tool for its intended use. It is a threat copy, not a forced taunt. There is no forced taunt in FFXIV, which is unusual for MMOs. Threat copies are superior to forced taunts coming back from death, for swaps, for pulling back one that got away. The reason is the aggro that threat copies give you persists. It doesn't evaporate in 5 seconds.

Of course, forced taunts are superior for their own intended uses, especially at the start of fights. But again, we don't have any such beast in this game. We just have to build threat the old fashioned way...
