afaik not many Jp can speak/write or understand engrish or english
Looking at these forums who can blame em.
Indeed. In order to explain a lot of complex mechanics, you're going to need to go beyond the auto-translate function for certain boss fights. I don't blame them for wanting to avoid the frustration of trying to piece it together via Auto-translate only for it to get lost along the way.
Remember how in FFXI, {Reward} was that BST ability that people threw into their shouts for gil/items on things? I remember hearing in JP that translated more as 'dog treat'. I can only imagine how the auto-translate function screws up long phrases.
The problem is "JP Only" doesn't just mean Japanese language only, but in some cases Japanese people only. I tried being nice and asking a party finder group if I could join (in Japanese) for Ifrit Extreme, which I was well geared for and already experienced. I was turned down because I wasn't 日本人 despite being someone that lives in Japan and can communicate fine. A person's race outside of the game shouldn't matter, and has no place in the party finder. It's fine if they only want people that can speak Japanese. That's what the language selection is for, but phrases such as "WHITE ONLY" or "<INSERT ANY OTHER RACE> ONLY" wouldn't be tolerable, so why is this?
How did they even know you weren't japanese in real life if you spoke fluently japanese? Or was your client set to english?
Let be realistic, if you get to choose with which people you want to play you will most certain pick the people that speak the same language, the same apply to them. The not trusting of people that have speak jp to them but the client is set to english is because when they ask for "jp only" the english people responded in jp using a translator, and face it the traslator is good but sometime the meaning of what you want to say is lost, so they decide to not trust a jp response and just check the client to see if you are trully undestanding in jp.
I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.
but when a group goes na only they r told how wrong they for excluding
This isn't a racism issue, it's a communication one. Back in FFXI I got into a lot of "JP only!" parties because i was willing to use the auto-translate function. It wasn't perfect but it was enough to communicate where we were going to camp, how much tp everyone had, when and in what order we would use weapon skills, and when to magic burst. Since a lot of people just would not use the auto-translate regardless of what language they spoke, it caused a lot of frustration and could kill a multilingual party. With this as a concern, it's easier to advertise that you want the group to all speak the same language. Spend some time with the auto-translate and get used to it, ARR's kind of sucks compared to 11's but it has enough to get basic thoughts through. If you're willing to use it then other people will probably be willing to as well.
^Using auto-translate is a good way to get kicked in a lot of JP groups, and most people who complain about getting kicked probably used it. I agree that you don't actually have to communicate much for a lot of content, so I don't see what the big deal is. At least to the point of checking client language, has there been a lot of people using machine translated Japanese? It's obvious I guess but gets the point across we're not writing a dissertation here. I never use it but my limited Japanese is more than enough when everyone knows the content already, and I haven't encountered people who were bothered about what my native language is yet.
In any case I encounter people who speak English as a second language all the time so I can't relate to that way of thinking at all. It's not a mutual feeling, Tonberry is the unofficial SEA community server and we're a very multicultural and multilingual crowd, you would strain to find exclusion there based on country. Honestly the rest of the world gets along fine so I play the smallest violin at the plight of the JP only crowd.
