I named my cat (RL one O.o) "Onry" inspired from the "JP ONRY" we used to see a lot of in FFXI

Honestly though, it's more about being comfortable communicating strategies than anything, would be quite hard when they can't speak English properly and you can't speak Japanese.

Of course you still have those who outright refuse English speakers for no reason, much like you have English speakers who don't like grouping with French speakers, etc.

Well.. there are usually 3 different cases where you can find JP-ONRY as an absolute requirement:

1: JP crappers, still learning the content. They still belive Coil or Extremes must be done chitchatting or discussing strategies with every member
(when we all know 0 chat is needed, just some macro with sounds at best to warn the group, Twintania included)

On this point i must say even using sounds if the player is absolutely not aware of what to do on that sound-emote , hear an emote with japanese text still puzzled about what is going on surely doesn't help.
One more reason because even if the group will not chitchat at all and just using sounds, they still pretend JP ONRY players. I guess it's meant to reduce crappers joining and not able to learn the fight for communication issues.

2: JP players bored to deal with E community.
On this point you have to thanks those huge amount of wierdos on E community trashing everyone with their pathetic attitude.
Which is : a player lacking any sane form of patience being a quitter at 1st wipe ruining a run on fights like primals/any content expecially where the player cannot be replaced (one thing drives mad a japanese player: waste time),
unrespectful wierdo typing in english some trash attacking other players (JP players not even able to understand what he said sometimes lol) at first wipe, and..
no need to continue we had a lot of threads talking about the infamous junk E community don't we?

3: Simple racism.
Xenophoby, quite widespread in japan against any gaijin, western on top. Social issue, even nowadays on a so modern and hyperconnected society.
I lost the count of how many times i saw with my eyes japanese men/women attacking a gaijin simply walking on UENO park, just because gaijin

Pick one, do a /shrug and move on. 3rd is surely the one you cannot fix, regadless of how fluent you can be speaking japanese

You cannot fake your origin: if you are still with them not instakicked you're just tolerated for desperation mostly, until you show you understand what is going on and what that emotesound means, eventually.
If you wonder how they know it, they just check the profile: E F G is underlined, it means you're a gaijin, regardless if you checked J on your profile (meaning you can speak japanese or just be japanese playing with an european/american account)

that's not how it works. the underlined means which language your client is in, nothing else. when I play on a JP server I have my game set to JP. when I play on a NA/EU server I have my game set to EN. I find it to be irritating when people are talking about locations or mobs or whatever and use a different name than how it's called in my client. (almost nobody uses the translator on the NA servers). depending on my client language, my underlined language is different.

Let's first agree on something: we each have the right to choose who to play with.

Now let's look at what the EN players are doing in the JP datacenter: JEDF and to hell with JP people.

Is it WRONG to say, we want to match up with English speaking people in the DF? Similarly, is it wrong for them to say they want to match up with Japanese speaking people?

There's really no solution to this. It's what comes with playing in a, well, for lack of a better way to put it, a "foreign" environment.

Back when I played on Masamune in 1.23 XIV, they had a party finder system similar to 2.0's and even back then they had thr comments in all caps "JP ONLY."

As annoying as it sounds and by the way that most english speakers interpret it, it's actually just thr Japanese language they are looking for only. Alt tab to google translate or look up common phrases and use them. So long as you are familiar with whatever they are doing and not messing up or making a fool outta yourself, most wont care if you join. Just dont use Auto-Translate since thats a dead give away you are baka gaijin. :P

Yeah I can vouch for the above, the way it is said they don't separate the nationality Japanese from the language, because I guess they assume no one else would speak it. But almost all of those groups would not care who you are if you can communicate in Japanese, that is all they're looking for.

Do it really matter if Japan only or anything? If like to get technical japanese players feel to new to this style of games and the entire rest of the world been playing it for 9+ years this style of mmos. So it a game that came from japan and they want to only play together, It should be cool they can learn that experience of this style of play and mmos together, FFXI was a different time and breed. The Rest of the world will just go on are merry way and enjoy the game.
