question about repairing armors and optimal rank

what happens when i wear higher rank armor? and where are the repair NPC in the 3 major cities? thanks

If you equip gear/weapons/tools that are too far above "Optimal" they will degrade significantly faster than if you used gear optimal to your rank. A nice guideline is to stay within +/- 5 ranks of optimal.

Dumb question, but physical rank (soon to disappear) has no bearing on armor degradation, does it?

Optimal rank is based entirely on your class rank.

In addition to degrading faster, you don't get the benefit of all the stats from the armor if its "optimal rank" is above your job rank. But on armor, the difference scales, so it's not as significant a difference as if you were using a weapon or tool above your rank.

Regarding repairs: it's always cheaper to have another player do your repairs. If you go afk next to the repair NPC in Ul'dah the local crafters generally get things patched up quickly.
