You know, this method of doing turn 2 sort of reminds me of the Vanish-Doom trick from Final Fantasy VI. The one where you could cast the Vanish "buff" on an enemy and then, since it caused magic attacks to automatically hit (which would also dispel the buff), cast Doom and instantly kill the enemy. This worked on almost every enemy in the game, including the final boss.

Following the same logic I keep seeing regarding the enrage strategy, I guess that trick wasn't really an exploit either -- it was just a creative use of game mechanics, even if it did completely trivialize the entire second half of the game.
