I got 3 Commendations in CM once as a Bard. It was very puzzling.
Most of my Commendations have come from either when I'm tanking or from Guildhests though.
It is way harder to spot a good dps from a bad one unless your a heavy burst dd (or you're staring at a parser). Any old idiot can deal damage. What gets commendations from me is when your not being an idiot. If you pull hate and you back off, I'll notice. If you sleep the links, I'll notice. If your using support abilities to make the party run smoother, I'll notice. You want my commendation? Do these things and you'll get one every time.
If there is a move with a semi-long cast time and you don't dodge it, you sure as hell wont get one. I can understand some lag here and there, but when you eat every aoe, I don't care how much damage you did.
Be nice, ask people if they know fights, explain things if people don't know what's what or be at least generally talkative AND be at least decent at your role. I commend people like that, not the "superest uberest most overgeared player who pwnzorz omgzzz". Also LB at the best time without people prompting you to do it 47 times seems to impress many.
But yes, it's absolutely harder to get one as DPS, because when it comes to healers and tanks, you can see pretty much instantly how good they are and will be seeing it the whole run, but with DPS it's a bit harder to determine and there's also a lot more of them, so it's often a bit tricky to stand out![]()

I've been focusing on DPS classes since 2.1, first Arcanist and now Pugilist. I've gotten more commendations than I expected.
I'll tell you what though, that little system has subtly made me up my game.
I average 1 commendation no matter what I'm doing, but when DPSing that's most likely just dumb luck. The exception to this is if I go into teaching mode either for the instance or someone making big noticeable mistakes on their class. Currently doing a ton of low level dungeons to level everything to 30, and at that level you run across a LOT of bad tanks, and I enjoy teaching them how to tank better, not only for their sake but for mine too since I'm an aggro ho. As long as I end my teaching with "take my advice or don't, I don't care" I tend to get 3 comms at the end. Of course you have to remember though that people who que together get no comm giving so...
I used to get a lot when I tanked but as DPS even when I do the most damage in the group, never pull agro and follow all the tactics I'm lucky if I get the odd one.
My group was wiping alot during Ultima HM and that got everyone rather depressed and there was talk of quitting. With 20 minutes left on the clock I decided, "oh what the hell" proceeded to saying "Rider kick!" in party chat and did a Dragon Fire Dive on Ultima and pulled everyone into the fight. Funnily enough, we downed him during that round and everyone had a good laugh about it in the end. Left the place with 7 commendations.
It seems to me that everyone has a different experience. I honestly think I got most of the shaft as a dragoon because it's rarely noticed on how good and hard I try to keep on DPSing. The trend I have noticed is tanks are always pushing commends now but only for themselves. I refuse to ask for commends because before they even came out I always greeted everyone, didn't get upset if someone died, always explained the mechanics of fights, and all around try to be helpful and nice.
People should be working together and being helpful without the need for commends. Yeah I like that there are less trolls but as they are on a slow decline these ass-kissing suck-ups are on the rise. I don't know how to make commends a better system but am kinda not liking the current one.
There was one Bard in AK who would take the mobs off me and kite them around as I popped a Regen to keep them up. (bad tank, was only attacking one monster -.-)
Definitely gave the Bard a commendation for that. At the end of the run the tank said "No commendations for you, Jon. You kept pulling aggro off me like a mofo" Bard was like "SERIOUSLY? You were attacking ONE monster per mob, I was the real tank here"
Lol
We REALLYYYYYYYYY need to be able to commend people you didn't queue with though, I feel terrible getting commendations but not being able to commend someone because I queued with a friend. :c
