The mechanics Yoshi and his team have selected to stretch out content and thus keep people subscribed are inherently dull, so the game is dull by design.
The main target of the methods the game has is to make the player (feel) bad for not playing, creating the sense that they are falling behind if they do not max their Myth each week, get their Coil run complete and get the CT drop of the week, because if a week passes and you did not fill those, you cannot recover that again, and you will be behind the rest of the people who did. Adding to this one are the new Beast tribes daily quests, if you don't do them, you won't max their reputations whit everyone else who started at day one. This is also enforced by the fact that crafted gear is worthless at high level, so if any player want to do the end content, they must pursue all the other gear.
I know everyone plays at different pacing, but the sense is there, if you are playing with a friend and you cannot log in one day, you will be behind him. So the game is now a set of tasks that must be completed daily and each week, and as such, they get old and boring, fast. The game it's designed to force you to play, whether you are having fun or not, and most probably, you are not having fun, not with these tasks the game is imposing. The fun comes form the play time with friends and the human interaction. Maybe the fights and instances were fun the first 10 times, but after all the forced grind, they aren't. And with this, if the fun comes from playing with friends, the Duty Roulette forcing you to go alone, just detracts from that point because you cannot even /tell your friends inside an instance (and no, not everyone has their same friends in the same FC/LS or want to talk about everything wherever someone else can read).
There are many other design "flaws" in my eyes in this game, but those are the biggest, and they won't change because this is Yoshi's vision for ARR, and looking at the changes they made through 1.0 to 1.23 and then further to ARR and now 2.1, it seems it's only to get worse and worse.
I already quit and canceled my subscription, and I'm sad about it, because I was really invested in FFXIV, but it's no longer FFXIV, it's ARR, a game I really never wanted to play.
