Okay, so what are they right now? Because in a 4 player party environment, people are going to be more inclined to take the 2 highest damage dealing jobs, if given the options to.This game is built around four-player party units. They cannot turn bard into a pure support job; there would be no place for them except on the fights where we would be required to have them for silence (and the drastic loss of DPS would make ADS a serious pain in the rear).
You can't have a support role with a four-player party unit. It has to be five or six.

Bards are DPS with utility via raid cooldowns. I could see Ranger being given more AoE and slightly better damage multipliers.
I originally hoped they would go the way of "bards => longbowmen of Gridania, rangers => Miqo'te hunters using shortbows", but I don't see it working anymore given how ARC and BRD are designed.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
