Staying Interested (how to keep playing when you feel lonely?)

My boyfriend and I have been playing for at least three months now, and the game is interesting. We think it's fun, I love the lore and world, there's just one issue.

We originally joined the Balmung server because our old Linkshell buddies from FFXI would be in this server. They don't come on anymore, and it seems everyone on this server is really interesting in role-playing with each other and not much for making random friends.

To put it simply, we're loosing interest because it's always just us online or we haven't made any new friends. One of the reasons I play MMORPGs is to play with others.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm not asking for friends, at all (otherwise I would just place this topic in the Balmung section).

My ideas:

* Pay $18 per character and transfer them to a less-RPing world or a friendly world
* Make new characters (which I personally don't mind, but him... :P) and do the above in hopes to find new hope, and make friends

Changing servers wouldn't be a bad idea, if you have the spare cash and the will to do.

There's always constant shouts here on Balmung for FCs and LSs.
You guys should try and join one that fits your playstyle ^^

Search for a fc on your Server that fits your taste (if possible with ts), talking with People who are playing the same game (or just Hearing their rants) is quit enjoyable.

Maybe we could temporarily join another server with new characters and see if anything happens - such as new interest due to community or friends in general.

I know what you mean. I was really tight with my FFXI LS, but I never really felt the same degree of friendship with people in FFXIV. I think FFXI was just such an impossible game to do anything without a good group of friends that the game mechanics created stronger bonds between people.
With FFXIV, you can pretty much solo most of the time and you don't even need friends to group. You can just queue and wait for random people who usually don't talk and jump out as soon as the instance is over. It's definitely designed for maximum progression which seems to be what most of the MMO community wants post-WoW.
TBH, I don't think you will find it any different in any other server. It's the game mechanics that cause people to come and go and not really feel the need to bond.
Just keep looking and chatting people up. You're bound to find someone else in the same boat as you and looking to do more than just level up.
