if they want to go by what things have cost they should fire the entire team including yoshi and shut the entire game down. they spent money anticipating making profits in the long run.

The point is that they don't know the exact cost, and if they don't know it a) they don't know how much they need to spend and b) their accounting will be off.

They have already assessed the costs of developing the feature in question, but the actual implementation is not free either. It's clear that they have decided to go for it regardless of the actual cost, but that doesn't mean they should ignore the cost altogether and just blindly throw money at the project.

This is none of the customer's business really, but at least it's not vague. Every company does this all the time.
