To bring fruition to this suggestion, they would likely need to implement postural changes also, as not all old and young people share the same spryness of step.

I hope at some point, maybe a grand "reopening" of the game, they'll allow us to implement major changes to our character, not just hair.

If it follows FF11 to an extent, most races don't age.
Taru's never age I.E. Shantotto
Mithra's don't age
Galka's don't age..because they reincarnate
It's also easier on the character designers. This is a teen oriented game.
The game designers live in the past, they think all players are teenage boys.
I managed with great effort to make myself a character that doesnt look like a youngster but then i get my first armor reward from a levequest....its underwear....so here is my middle aged character running around in undies....i setttled for my old start armor.
Sometimes i really wonder, are game developers thinking with their right or their left buttock?.
Well the majority of players in any fantasy MMO would be teens to young adults...I don't think they're living in the past at all. As they say, no one wants to see ugly characters. The game designers live in the past, they think all players are teenage boys.

An older crowd would be M rated oriented.
I can agree to this. It's funny to think of the age range concerning the players, yet we're all somewhat forced to be young and attractive.
Old wrinkly Miqo'te and some how.....they would still look cute lol, or SE would make something up like "Miqo'te don't age ;p
I will admit there are some really stupid ideas floating around, but I could get behind this one, would add some nice diversity to the crowds.
Who said ugly? You mean NOT being a teen is ugly? I stand offended :'(
Its all about options and the options are fairly limited and very "cliche" in most mmos, not only FFXIV.
Playing an ugly char is an option too, so why not, its a role playing game after all so why the limitation.
Oh and btw i really didnt get the "older crowd would be M rated", far as i know you will find a lot more..erm...M rated stuff in young crowds than you would in older crowds :P
I am for this because it's not prevalent enough, not because it's not already there.
There is an "old" and a "young" face for almost every race and gender. It's especially apparent for the Hyur and Elezen males. If I were to ask for more options it would be the ability to change body shapes and the look after you've made the character. Nothing drastic like an entire face change, but 1 shade lighter or darker from your current skin color and the ability to get a different hairstyle would be very much appreciated. Different body types such as Chubby, Skinny, Short or Tall (as those have skeletal proportional changes that coincide with those changes not just size) would be nice touches to have per character rather than per race.
The "Old" options for faces are as follows:
Midlander Male: Face 3
Midlander Female: Face 4
Highlander Male: Face 3
Elezen Male: Face 4
Elezen Female: Face 4
Lalafell Male: Face 3 or 4 (Have the most amount of facial hair options)
Lalafell Female: Face 3 (Only if I had to pick, but there is little indication of making this race/gender look "old")
Mi'Qote: Face 4 (if even applicable, this race is far too ambiguous when it comes to age. Nothing seems below 25)
Roegadyn: Face 4 (With a face 1 as a close second, this race is easier to make look old)
The only reason I made distinctions for the Hyur clans was because the base character models are the same between clans for the rest of the races. The Highlanders actually have different face models than the Midlander Males. This is not the case with the rest of the races. Any of the options you could add age by adding gray or white highlights to certain hair colors. There are even some base hair colors that tend to lean towards a middle aged black/brown graying, specifically for the Hyur. This color can then be accentuated further by adding gray or white highlights depending on style. Some of the hairstyles don't suit a natural look when you implement highlights while others do a much better job.
The "younger" faces are especially prevalent in the Hyur and Elezen races. They are characterized by a large eye to smaller head ratio and smaller features such as nose and lips. This "look" accentuates youthful characters. These are kind of easy to spot as are the "Older" male looks in these two races. It's harder to make "Older" female characters but again, it's prevalent the differences in the Hyur and Elezen races. All other races are more ambiguous with their ages.
All in all it may be better if they added a "wrinkles" section to the "characteristics" sub-menu rather than just scars and especially earrings. Earrings and bandages I feel aren't something that should even be included in the character creation process. That seems like equipment that should/could be added on as an option later on in gameplay. I'd rather have more defining permanent features involved in character creation especially considering we still can't change some of those appearances after we've created them. This is especially true for character models that allow bandages such as Keeper Mi'Qote and Roegadyns.
They left all of the faces age ambiguous enough to make them old or younger based on other things such as hair color and prominent features but the ones I listed above are the best chance at making an older looking character. I'd like more extreme options or like I said before, wrinkle options in lieu of options that shouldn't act as a permanent installation on your character.
Basically anything that promotes individuality needs to be fully investigated and developed.
