When does the game start to be fun ?

Started yesterday played for about an hour and it reminds me a lot of FFXI and although I liked that game the whole game felt like 1 big grind like every other japanese game I've played.
Around what level does the game pickup ?
I realise I wont see anything too exciting or entertaining or remotely fun until later levels but if I know the level required for fun to start I can maybe pull a few all nighters ^_^

    Any info is appreciated

Reading between the lines, which risks being completely wrong, I wonder if you mean dungeons? The first is at level 15 and story takes you through 4 by the time you reach level 20 storyline. Of course if you don't do the story quests you won't get them. (story quests looks like flames around the icon )
Fates start low level, guild hests and guild leves at level 10. The option to take any other class as well as your starter class opens at level 10 of your class quests. Travel at level 15 unlocked by story quests allows you to visit the other cities/areas.
As for the new content they only added this week tbh I don't know what levels they start at but you only have to read the patch notes to find that out. With more dungeons, PVP, treasure maps and so much more.

Unfortunately, at your level there isn't much besides FATEs and perhaps your hunting log. As Leyra said, a lot opens up when you reach the 10-15 mark. This won't take you very long, maybe a few hours.

I think the greatest thing is to have a group to play with. We started a Reddit thread during early access and created a FC when we transferred servers. Now, we have a fun and entertaining endgame group that makes me want to log in and spend time doing whatever needs to be done - including leveling alts through dungeons. 2.1 has made dungeons so much better and increasingly fun, along with a bunch of new content that will fill gaps for newer players reaching endgame.

    Hope this helps

If you are a MMO veteran, do not be surprised that the pre-50 levels will be "too easy", especially if you are not into story/"enjoy the scenery while not rushing through every dialogue box".
Also, seems that you picked Marauder. I leveled all magic classes to lv50, my main is WHM. Compared to WHM, even BLM is a lil' boring...so not sure about tanks, but with mostly instant-cast skills, the 2.5 GCD can be quite obvious. This is not the case for casters with cast time.
It is explicitly stated by developers that this MMO is designed bearing in mind that many of the FF fans will be first-timer to MMO, barring FFXI.

I enjoyed the story, the NPC dialogue (yes I spoke with all NPCs as the quest progress, not just the quest giver), and even those NPCs who doesn't have a title over their head (they will only say something if you move close to them), move to all corners in a new map, took a lot of screenshots, tried out a lot of armors for the look, laughed at a lot of the quest title and names (my favorite so far is an inn's name called "Eternal Sleep", lol), collecting minions, bardings, tried gathering/crafting (but stopped coz running out of inventory space @_@), love the music, weather, starry sky, and running around with UI turned-off...I am having a lot of fun even before reaching lv50, and still having a lot of fun especially after patch 2.1.

But your mileage may differ, to each his/her own...your fun may start later, or never, so...not sure what will trigger your fancy, but I say try to do all activities mentioned above, get into an FC, at least get a char to lv50, and try out a tank, a melee dps, a ranged dps, and a healer so see which one suit you more.

sorry but i can't take that serious. have you ever played a japanese rpg in the past 10 years? not to mention the "grind" in Mario games and the like.

But that aside: just do your story quests. In the beginning you level faster by them than the level requirement for them raises, especially if you do the fates you encounter while doing the story. Later on (lvl 20 or so onwards) it won't be enough anymore and you need to do other quests, dungeons and/or fates. If the story is not fun to you, then yes, the game will become very grindy. And without knowing what you find fun or interesting we can't tell you whether it becomes different or not. As others have said, dungeons get unlocked from lvl 15 on.

The game isnt any more grindy (time to level wise) than WoW or Rift. It CAN feel grindy if all you are doing is 1 thing to level. Alternate between doing dungeons (1st becomes available at lvl 15) FATES, and questing. ALWAYS make sure you are up to date on your story quest and class quest. Most dungeons are unlocked through the story quest, plus your mount.

It says you're level three. You can get to level three without even leaving town just by talking to NPCs and running errands for them. Mix in quests, FATEs, Hunting Log, GuildLeves and GuildHests, which you'll gain access to soon. Once you hit fifteen you can start mixing in dungeons.

EDIT: Checked Lodestone. So, you're level 9 now. So you should have unlocked Leves by now and be well into the story. Just keep mixing up the quests with FATEs. You should easily be finished with your first Hunting Log now. And make sure you're keeping up with your class quests.

It's not much of a grind if you're keeping up with all the quests and jumping in on FATEs when you run across them.

What grind are you talking about? There's no grind at all in the early levels of this game, at least not on your first class. Quests give you more XP than you need so you'll generally end up outleveling a lot of them. Now if you add multiple classes, then you may get into some grinding, as you'll already have used a lot of the quests on your first class, but as others have mentioned, even then there are lots of different sorts of content, so you can vary how you level enough to avoid grind even then if you want to. The only time you'll really get into a grind is at endgame. Endgame is all about grind, but that's true of any MMO, as the whole point of having endgame content is to keep people busy until the next expansion can be developed.

As for when the fun starts, that's level 1.
