Those who have built houses

I'm wondering how the planning works when building a house, is there a set layout and you place the type of material you want (stone,brick,wood wall etc). I would love to see the type's of houses people build if it is something like a grid design similar to how a mog house could be decorated. Cookie cutter houses are boring, seeing as we have to built the components seems logical we could decide where a wall goes etc.

i think you get premade layouts to pick from, you cant change them, only decorate them...
