The point of MMO PvE *** is that.
The point of PvP competition as a whole is to overcome your opponents via skill and tactical play.

People who are truly, and I mean truly competitive are going to farm the gear and go into the 4 team premades. People whining about gear are probably not the type that would be getting into ffxiv eSports anyways (as if that would ever exist).

People whining about gear want real competition, not bads relying on crutches. And don't feel like you should have to grind hundreds of hours to be competitive.
I don't think people understand the difference between "best" and "biggest". The reason games like LoL, SC2 and any other e-sport is considered the "best" PvP game is because it's simply bigger. The reason it's bigger is because anyone can join and play whenever they want. The barrier of entry is so low.
The reason I play MMORPG's is because I love character progression and I have since I started playing oldschool RPG games. Dedicating time to develop your character and becoming stronger is the whole point of most MMO's, proven by the fact that they limit your progress weekly so you don't rush to the end and stop paying.
The reason I DON'T play LoL is because there is no character progression. The reason GW2's PvP was a flop is because no one sees the point in playing it. You gain no form of progression from it (though, the whole game feels like that as soon as you hit 80).
This is coming from someone who hasn't played PvP yet. I want to start playing PvP, encounter strong players and get facerolled, keep trying, dedicate time and eventually, one day, come toe-to-toe with the same players that facerolled me. Same reason I tried hard in PvE when I saw how strong people who started playing earlier than me were.
You say casual non-pvpers ruin PvP, but it's casual MMO players that ruin MMO's. I don't play sandbox games that punish you for not playing the way you want and I don't play linear story-based games when I want to explore the world. If you want that kind of PvP, play LoL for PvP and play FF14 for PvE. The majority of MMO players play for progression. If I were to spend 100 hours in PvP and only had a minion and armor skins to show for it I wouldn't feel satisfied. All I'd have is bragging rights.
I'll say the same thing I say to people who don't like the interruption system in PvP: Play a game that fits your need, don't play a game and expect it to change depending on your needs. MMORPG's are about the grind.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that Final Fantasy is amongst the oldschool RPG's out there. They were completely about progression, too. This was one of the main reasons I didn't laugh when I first heard they were making FFXI an MMO. It makes sense as they're both about the same thing.

Moogle: Black Mage ftw.
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/129860-So-I-tested-some-BLM-rotations...
Here's a link to a bunch of rotation and DPS numbers I wrote up to try help BLM see they aren't as weak as they might think.
They make games like the one you want OP, they're called MOBAs and they're really quite fun.
In my MMO however I prefer gear progression. How else is my under-geared casual ass going to school some wannabe MLG over-geared scrub? I'll take a few losses just for that moment...
I wouldn't some form of dynamic rating/matchmaking system however. That way high gear/skill players never meet low gear/skill players. But it'd still afford me the chance to demolish a player with better gear than me if I'm good enough.
I cannot believe people are arguing against fair and balanced PVP.
I want to live on another planet.
Gear progression does not belong in PVP, end of story. If you argue against this, you're flat out wrong. Want gear progression? Go PVE.

Then why are you playing an MMO?
They're arguing against removing progression, they WANT progression in their PVP. It doesn't make them wrong, it means they have a different opinion than you. Get over yourself, and relax... declaring your OPINION is right and every differing opinion is wrong is pompous and insulting. It really seems like you are very obsessed about the pvp stuff... maybe you should consider playing a pvp focused game.
Skill and tactical play does not exclude gear.
What's to say that you don't use a strategy that requires someone in your group to stack a non standard stat to make use of an uncommon mechanic to surprise your opponents, maybe you want your healer to stack health so they can run front line and be a distraction. Being able to use different gear to optimize different things to your groups advantage is just as much a part of strategy as positioning and skill rotations.

To claim that people are wrong, despite their arguments just because you disagree with them makes you very close-minded.
I could say the exact same thing about PvE. Gear progression does not matter at all. You want to beat titan? Do it with skill. Want to beat coil? Do it with skill. There is a great flaw in that logic and it simply is "The lack of progression" less people will play if there is no progression or anything to do. People need to chase the carrot in order to keep going. MMO's tend to fail if there is no progression and putting no progression in PvP is not smart or ideal.
PvP gear not only bring progression, it brings some balance (not perfect balance) in order to counter the pve gear stats that would otherwise be deemed too op in pvp. (Not many people has their pvp sets yet) So in reality, its a win win situation. It brings balance and gives players something to do.
No, aesthetic progression doesn't count. This is what i prefer. Everyone wearing the same lvl pvp gear, but those who farm ALOT of marks can get prettier gear. Thats what i like but it is not something people will put in alot of effort tho.
I think this current rank/wolf-mark system is too dam grindy though.

it easy, u want gear progression?
don't allow people without pvp gear play vs player with it, just put another option in duty finder,Arena without morale
I fu_cking farm for my Gear ilvl90 drg 3 months for nothing?because now this gear is usseles and just work for pve and now need to use a horrible gear(visually).
Is funny how some guys don't sleep just for get fast ilvl70 pvp gear and pwned in arena with his gears("pros"),and ofc they can farm more easy vs no gear players, because if u havent morale , is lose 90% vs this players, disadvantage increases more and more.
This pvp mode is only for no-lifes hardcore players and ffxiv not is hardcore game.I can say this from my experience in REAL hardcore games.
