It would have to be a new system implemented into the game, but it is a possibility.

Hunting Log update come with level cap increasing
GC Hunting logs are for ranking up. An update come with new GC ranks.
If it need to be something for NMs, why not rank 6 treasure map that pop up an NM before you can open the treasure chest to get the NM drop? Something like NM leves did in 1.0?

But yeah, an NM system of some kind. Those didn't really seem like NM though, more like a full party doing a regular Leve together, I mean, DRG and MNK tanks.
and a little off topic but .. I haven't looked at many videos of 1.0 and never really did much research into that game... But I sure do like the battle system a lot better than what we have currently. Sure the UI needed reworked. That one Hotbar to house all of your skills seems cumbersome. But there are so many skills being used and seems to be a lot more to do during battle. Why did they have to overhaul everything?
During that time, there were no jobs and PGL and LNC could tank. Of course, the best tanks were GLA and THM ^^.
THM was also the best healer and a good DoT damage dealer. One of the reason why the community wanted more specializations for the classes in parties and Yoshida came up with the job system.
In the leve it was a handfull strong monsters + 1 NM

I would like to see Hunting Logs tied in with the treasure hunt system.
Required: completed grand company hunting log 3
Uses: Company Seals + Treasure Map (more seals for higher level map / harder challenge)
item gained: Hunting Permit (objectives, difficulty and location vary)
Reward: (Convertable / Meldable il50-60 armor), MOST-difficult (il70 armor equivalent)
Seals + map can only be traded once per day, permits are unique (untradeable) and consumed on use win or lose. Permits fights can be undertaken in a party (and should be). Reward coffer from defeating the enemy is awarded only to the Permit holder, other members are awarded a small amount of philo-tomestones.
Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Bring back some of that nostalgia. Maybe they could implement really tough ones too where you had to have a Full Party to kill, like a Vrtra or Nidhogg. This would be sick.
