GW2(SPVP), WOW arenas(next expansion) both normalize gear in arena setting PVP, because no one likes losing to someone because they slay dragons and you don't. Get with the times SE, I'm sick of losing to people simply due to gear.
Uhm, slaying dragons doesn't help you much in PvP. the ilvl55 gear you can buy is as useful as considerably higher level gear elsewhere.

Also, I don't really care what other games do. If there's no useful reward, nobody will play. Normalizing would kill the pvp.

Gear progression should be PVE and world PVP only.

IT IS NOT FUN TO LOSE DUE TO GEAR.
Then PvP isn't for you. Stick to FPS or action multiplayer games where there is no gear factor. Or play one of the games that sucks any sense of advancement, like the ones oyu mentioned.

it is fallicious to argue that everyone should simply imitate whatever the most famous example did.

Normalizing is just catering even more to carebears than this game already does. If you couldn't heed the advice above, then play level 30 or 40 cap, where virtually everyone has gear that exceeds the cap and thus gets capped down to it.

Without the progression, interest will wane much more quickly.
