Yeah lets make a big drama because some kid will shout "boobs" in chat or because someone will spam some wts/wtb ads.
Lets concentrate on the negative aspects and ignore all the new players that you could help by answering their questions, all the ideas that could be exchanged, all the game info that would be made available, all the friendships that could be formed by having a global chat. Not to mention the game will feel so much more alive (and well ...*cough).
Lets say no to all that because we are oh so afraid of them spammers, yep that makes so much sense.
Well clearly you can't see that people will have different opinions based on their experiences. Many people here have been through at least one MMO where they didn't need global chat, that was FFXI, and it was the most tight knit community you will ever find in an MMO (at least for the 3 years I played it)...and its funny how often "global chat will help the noobs" has come up, funny because I've never seen it used for this purpose since most things go ignored on that channel considering how often its spammed. However, if they have multiple "global" channels it might help I'd agree with that (although they would still be spammed to hell and back from my experience).

If the game has a good party search system, also for wards and stuff.
I'm sure we won't need global chat to find party or sell/buy stuff...

But if someone wants Global Chat for random chat, that is another thing...
Then it is good when you are bored.. you can reading what's going on.. like that..

There are cons and pros for Global chat.

Sooo I would say,, better to have it..
If you don't want it? then give us a command to join/leave channel.
If you see ppl trolling on Global chat... we can always /blacklist them.

    What do you think?

    ... BOOBS! ...naw im sorry...

So ya, toggle button for multiple different channels and a toggle button to turn them all off would make it nice. I feel like it may eliminate /sh though. D; besides that I have no gripes against it. Let the kids spam. That just means we know who to avoid in game. ^^

I'm.. kind of against global chat myself. I admit, I'd not freak so long as I could shut it off - especially if it started shut off. But still, I've always found the idea of a global channel weird, and kind of thematically stupid, redundant but for the daftest and most annoying rungs of the game, and a discouragement on using the long range communication mediums like linkpearls.

I'd support a global channel ONLY if there is a 5 minute cooldown timer between every comment made in the channel. A global channel shouldn't be a place for conversation or spam. Once every 5 minutes is more that frequent enough for someone to say they're looking for a party/members or a LS recruiting, or someone selling something. If a new player has a question they can ask their question and enter into /tells with someone who is willing to help them without the whole world having to hear it. If someone want to come in and shout a line of abuse at the game world, who cares if it's only once every 5 minutes?

Without a cooldown timer between comments it opens the channel up to mindless bickering, much like can be seen on the General Discussion forums. This seems to be the main problem people have with the idea of global chat and it should keep both camps happy in regards to the uses of the channel.

Honestly, the last thing I care about is the chat system. If a game is fun, then I will figure out how to work around it. I played plenty of Resident Evil games online without even the courtesy of voice chat or written chat, and I was not deterred from enjoying myself online because the methods of communication were inferior. If Yoshi P can make this game fun enough that I don't care about the chat system, then improvements would just be icing on the cake.

Reading from the dev post and a little onward.

What I'm reading that I can agree with:
Receive a regional linkpearl that reflects only the current region (cannot participate if you are not in the region) (each camp, dungeon, and city could be considered a region)

Receive a new player linkpearl after completing initial mission.

Tools to quickly blacklist players and report for spam.

    Tools to manage linkshells remotely.

Ability to quickly communicate between linkshells such as /L1 responding to linkshell 1, /L2 responding to linkshell 2, and so forth.

If companies take the place of linkshells, then linkshells would become player moderated chat channels of sorts. An invite only basis of

Not a fan of global chat. In my opinion, a global chat should only be used to desperately coordinate a trade, party formation, advertise a flavor of linkshell, or advertise a company.
    /halfseriousmode on
Global chat costs 10,000+ gil per post.
That tiny lol message was better off sent in a /tell.
    /halfserious mode off

The disadvantage of having regional chat and the like turned off is comparable to not joining a linkshell. You may miss things that could benefit you, and there are things that will not apply to you.

I thought I heard something about them making an aetheryte chat channel or something a LONG time ago. Though I have to say, constantly seeing trade chat from WoW would get quite annoying after a while. xD

Maybe the size of the local chat and shout should just be expanded so that when you are in any given city, you can basically hear all the chat that's going on, since right now it seems like the distance on say and shout are pretty short.

A global chat channel might be nice, though for me it'd have to be something that you can choose to turn on/off for reasons like the example that indira has posted above. In some cases a global chat can just be way too spammy.

It doesn't matter to me if there is global because i would just block it until i had a use for it, then block it again when i was done. I do agree with switching LS chat easier though.. i don't like changing them every time.
