Global chat is a bad idea because it aggravates the entire community, directly and indirectly I think. Optional or not, it's bad imo.

Have an option to turn it off simple as that. Also "Global chat is a bad idea because it aggravates the entire community" what community are we talking about here the 30 people playing on each server or the 30 people spaming the forums?
That wouldn't work as well because you can't join a Linkshell unless another player explicitly invites you into it. We need to have a chat channel in which everyone is allowed to communicate freely, without having to be invited by someone else first. Why not just make it possible to turn some or all of your linkshells on at once and viewable in a single chat log, maybe just in different colors. Then, people with a lot of shells could have the illusion of global chat and more private people can only turn 1 or 2 on.
If you can 12 LS's then you could respond to them with /1 - /12. This way people could craft their own global chats.
Uh... no, it doesn't aggravate the entire community, and claiming that it does only exemplifies a high degree of bias on your part, because you assume the entire community shares your views (news flash: they don't). Maybe it aggravates YOU, but you are not the entire community.
Basically, global chat channels are only aggravating if you LET them aggravate you. But if you just sit back and relax a bit, you realize that they really aren't spammed with constant bickering anywhere near as much as people here seem to believe they are. Honestly, the types of arguments I've seen on global chat in other games is no worse than the arguments I've seen break out on these very forums. Perhaps we should get rid of these forums, too?

I've been thinking about this a bit because the way the game is setup, one of the benefits of joining a linkshell is for this limited ability to globally communicate with each other. Actually, at this point in time, it might be the only benefit until they add more LS-centric abilities.
Introducing much needs global channels would take away from the apparent specialness of linkshells. But that conversation (what benefits should be given to linkshells) is probably best left for another topic.
Honestly, there isn't much difference between LS chatter and IRCish style global channels.
global chat = No thanks!
Save the Earth. It's the only planet with video games.
But why? What is it about global chats that you don't like? Are you referring to every possible variant of global chats, from the addition of just one new channel -- let's call it /all -- to a more IRC style of global chats that you only see if you join? Why are global chats bad, but not linkshell chats? As linkshell chatting is currently the only form of global chat in the game. How do you differentiate between the two?
The issue here is people are being unclear about what they don't like and want to avoid. We most likely want the same things overall, but our approach to them is what differs.
But isn't that more of an issue with Linkshells, rather than chat channels? LSes right now are little more than glorified private chat channels, but that means that they need to IMPROVE LSes, not refuse to add good communication features to the game.I've been thinking about this a bit because the way the game is setup, one of the benefits of joining a linkshell is for this limited ability to globally communicate with each other. Observing this thread, I find it interesting that most who are leaving objective and insightful opinions on this matter are also thorough as to how and why this would improve XIV's chat system. Some against cite subjective, short sentence answers such as, "I just don't like it." which doesn't bring anything to the table of helping those who are being objective here, such as the devs and community managers reading this who are trying to understand why this feature would or wouldn't be helpful.
Citing reasons such as RMT and trolling are not helpful when they are generalizations based on the entire internet and its demographic of users as a whole. It is not the fault of an online game's design for those problems--it is the user who is too intolerant and lazy to block something that exists unavoidably everywhere on the internet and not just in this game. Especially when users have an internet standard level of control over these issues and it does not take more than a few precious seconds of their time to block them either. By the logic of this argument, RMT and trolling already exists now in both XI and XIV's chat system, so should we further limit the existing chat functionality as well?
Some stated that making global chat channels "optional" still does not work if the user could miss important conversations due to them disabling the chat channel to avoid spam and/or griefers. This is again laziness and the user's fault for not blocking the interruptions or notifying the proper in-game authorities. It's an argument that shoots itself in the foot. Expressing value in the idea of an optional chat channel and then stating one's own laziness to control these issues within seconds is not the fault of the game's design and why you could potentially miss an important conversation--it's that user.
Some stated expanding the options on our chat system would not enhance the community in this game without citing a reason why. Please tell us, the devs and community managers who are reading why it wouldn't enhance the game's community (without the use of internet generalizations like RMT and trolling).
If no one thinks and responds objectively about these discussions that better shape the future of this game, then it will be the subjective voices of this community that will be known for further limiting and driving this game into the ground. A little more objectivity, please.![]()

For the record I have twice given reasons as to why I wouldn't want it implemented and my posts go ignored and a few posts later "but no one is giving a good reason!" Just because you guys choose to ignore the reasons doesn't mean they aren't there. But once again I'll say this is hardly a big deal and I wouldn't even care if its implemented and I can't believe how bored some of you are to the point that you're all crying over something this silly. Who cares?Observing this thread, I find it interesting that most who are leaving objective and insightful opinions on this matter are also thorough as to how and why this would improve XIV's chat system. 'General Discussion' on these forums is like a general chat. But everyone here is participating.
To be honest, if the forums didn't exist, many of us would have little interest left in this game. I personally spend 2-3 times more time on the forums than I do in Eorzea.
If there were global chat channels, I would probably spend more time in game. As it is, there is no one to talk to.
