The point of Chocobos would be for traveling to areas that are not accessible via teleporting and there is a lot of areas in the game where teleporting only makes the journey slightly shorter. So the need would still be there. Currently teleporting is only useful for getting to key points but does not make the entire map fully accessible. Because of this, I see now harm in it being free and I do not see it affecting the usefulness of Chocobos. And then there is the simple joy of riding one.
