You can get XI and all expansions for an absolutely ridiculous price now, pocket change really. I suggest to simply find out yourself, it's well worth the investment.
XIV had potential when they first showed their design intentions, their early vision of what the game would be. There's very little left of that now. XIVs "uniqueness" is that they managed to stand still in their development when everyone else moved forward.
Problem is XI is not the same game at all anymore. If it was I'd go back, but the level cap raise and addition of Abyssea made sure I'd never consider returning. You can get XI and all expansions for an absolutely ridiculous price now, pocket change really. FFXI was amazing for its time, the only MMO I would play mostly because of the community and the feeling of accomplishment from finishing a tough mission or getting some awesome gear you've been working toward. Now it would probably be difficult to start from scratch but it would probably be fun still.
Abyssea spoonfeeds you gear, which I guess is the new standard MMO gamers expect and the level cap raise just changes the whole game, it's subjective if you find it good or bad, but in general it's bad because it changed what made FFXI....FFXI the past 8 years.
Different and Unique, Don't you mean Bland and Boring?
You what was awesome about the new expansion.SE: Hey all that gear and stuff we centerd around our 75 cap is about to be useless in a few months! Fuck you everyone who spent their hard time getting relic weapons cause they are gonna suck soon, but you can do another long ass quest to make them better again... that's exactly why i quit XI and never looked back a freaking 80 or 85 cap would have been just fine to make everything people worked for over the past years not seem useless.
