I actually prefer the way Ragnarok Online, FFXI, and a few more hardcore earlier MMOs did things. Not to say these newer games aren't good, or fun. But those felt much more... satisfying. Today though, we live in an age where a game like that would have a very difficult time surviving. I would expect at LEAST half the player base of any MMO to unsub or leave if a game went to the same level of risk and difficulty that FFXI went to. I never personally played FFXI, but from what I saw and heard of it, it was a LOT harder than this game, MUCH more unforgiving(to the point that you leveled down if you died too much), and overall much more satisfying when someone was done or defeated, etc.

Systems like exp loss on death, grinding mobs for levels, no explanation on where to go(to encourage exploring), BRUTAL leveling systems, stat and skill point allocations which cannot be reverted, and many more, are just systems that won't work anymore. If they were to implement systems like that, it'd have to be on a game where the costs for the company were rather low, the graphics needed to be low, and the overall quality of the game would suffer due to those mechanics being a pain in most peoples' eyes. I can speak for myself, but not others when I say that... I would rather have it like FFXI and Ragnarok. But I blame that on my old schooling gaming experiences. For those who would claim I am looking through rose-tinted glasses, this is false. I still come back to Ragnarok every so often, and never really stopped playing.
