How did they sub for more than 180 days? I'm an EU player and I bought enough timecards to get to 270, but it won't let me add any more.

Sub for 90 days when the game launched, you would have had to renew right as 2.1 hit, so you did 180 days then. Done
This of course depends on if you owned 1.0, bought the PS3 version, etc. 1.0 owners got 14 days free, coupled with the 7 days free everyone got at the start due to issues, 90 days put them right at the 2.1 launch to renew.

Some players can use crysta to up their sub before expiration as well.
