Lol, good stuff.
Anyways, I've always been a hotkey kind of player. I never really touched the 'micro menu', so this change shouldn't affect me much.. but what really bothers me is to hear SE's developers constantly come out and say they can't add more options because of: "limitation" this and "limitation" that. *sigh*
It's always something due to their lame game engine. What a piece of junk.

Please consider this:
- 1920x1080/1200 displays are not rare anymore, if you have data against this please tell us so we can stop pretending we're the majority :3
- If you start off your designs with scalability in mind, you would have built the option at the beginning.
Looking forward, there will be a lot of UI elements that will run into your 1280x720 limitation. Especially when the player-made add-ons come into play. Please, please, please do not limit resolution on player-made addons. Add-ons exist for customization, it is so we can each get exactly the UI we want. Any such limit on PC add-ons defeat the purpose of add-ons.
I'm very worried about the future of the UI. It seems the UI team work only to be satisfactory at the lowest level. Little room for customization is provided, and where they are provided, they're are very restrictive and cater to the lowest hardware specs. Nothing in the UI is ever made to cater to better specs.
Please put 1920x1080/1200 along side 1280x720 when you design future UI elements. You boast how you compare colors and performance on different major brands of displays, yet you never consider the usability on high resolution. It gives the impression that the work is always half-done.

I also do not like the condensed menu. These changes were made without consulting the community and it is already showing whiplash.
I would like this back as well or at least given the option to go with full or micro menu buttons
All i can say is that SE -better- support add-ons that will give us better customization on our UI. WoW had a lot of different varients, but somehow i doubt Square will allow much to be done.. if it's ever released, anyway. This specific reason has been cited many times for various parts of the UI.

"Please look forward to it" I guess.. though, as always we'll be hearing "I'm sorry" and "Please be patient" afterwards...
I don't mind the new menus, because I prefer compact nested lists to sprawling icon layouts. But I still think SE should give people the option.
That said, the following argument simply doesn't hold water:
Ctrl, Alt, and Shift (and any combination thereof) can be used for hotkeys, so it's not like people lose custom hotkeys by reassigning the defaults. For example, I use Ctrl+R for return and Ctrl+T for teleport. The only reason I still use the menus at all is to select items that I haven't yet bound. Hotkeys are always quicker for keyboard users than clicking.
Eh, no.
White Knights aside people who love XI and loved the UI there did it because it could be controlled using ONLY the keyboard, so the menu system worked perfect for the way things are structured in that game. Same with using a game pad, it's far more convenient in XI than it ever will be in XIV. No need to use a mouse at all.
But the moment XIV went for the WoW-ish UI that required a mouse was the moment using menus became a liability rather than a good feature. And if you see the silly reply they gave they did it for space because they have decided people playing at 1080p and up have to suffer the same as people playing at 720p. As simple as that.
So again, no, you are unlikely to see anyone from XI (unless they are trolling) defending the menus here.
Can we have a customizable macro menu then? Allow us to put up to X number is shortcuts on it.
this!
and really for all the people that say "just use the short cut key" or " just hot bar it" , then what's the point of having this micro menu if we aren't going to use it...
