If the patch breaks/loses connection, goto the FFXIV folder in my doc's and there should be a "downloaded" or "Updates" folder or something that nature (i'm at work so i can't double check atm) and delete the partial file then start it up again. Make sure your PC doesnt go to sleep/idle/standby ect while it's patching and you should be good.

Then start updating again, and after it nukes the partial file but before it writes the first chunk to it(I want to say it does this every 4MB, but don't quote me on that) overwrite the new 0KB one with the copy. The launcher will be confused as hell but eventually pick back up where it left off. I make no guarantees this won't break something horribly given the sloppy nature of the work-around, but it's how I had to do the initial install/update of the game at launch when I couldn't stay connected to the servers to save my life.
Hey, how exactly did you overwrite the file? Because, when I tried this, I either get an error or my pc won't let me copy because it says a program's using it.

That doesn't work for the PC. When you get an error or stop a download, unless the updater installed that particular file first, it deletes the partial file and starts over from the last file you needed. I'm not even sure if that intentional or not. It's why it's such a problem.
