    It's a staggered allowance I bet. x amount of clients are allowed to connect to ensure network stability. Once stability is confirmed, another x will be allowed to log in. Everyone rushes at once and it'll kill the servers due to packet overload.

    Wouldn't want their shiny new hardware to melt

    It may be regional. A bunch of my friends have been able to log in without issue, but I'm still receiving the "maintenance" message, even after reloading the launcher.
