The reason it's so expensive is to remove that inflation on servers because of the high rmt presence and gil generation. Too much gil floating around for no reason and SE is looking for ways to get rid of it without just taking it. Don't know why they care about inflation anyway the crafting is one big mini game of people trading amongst themselves with no real point. As of now few gear sets worth crafting and they are replaced with i90.
Housing is major focus of 2.1. So big they devoted an entire Live Letter to it. This is not some fluff.

They put a lot of work and development time into this, spent a lot of time building up peoples expectations only to lock most of us out behind a giant gil-wall. We care so much because for those of us who don't enjoy running the same dungeons over and over again to get the leetest gear this was the content that we've been most excited for, and now it might as well not exist.

At the end of my day I see it as a small zone that you can decorate, not knocking if people like to do that, hell, I love the Sims, BUT don't see the point of an MMO having housing. The gil-wall is to remove some gil from the market. Just an agree to disagree and I know I might be a minority in not caring about housing but still doesn't change my view.
That's the kicker though. If the intent was to remove gil from the market, it makes no sense to set prices so high that almost anyone interested in buying house (which is going to be pretty much everyone who has been hoarding their gil) to hoard even more in the hopes of being able to afford a house later on. People are going to become even more self-sufficient so as not to waste the gil they need. There's going to be a lot of people flooding the markets and a lot less willing to buy what they're selling. Better to let people into the houses and charge rent.

Also, I don't blame you for not being interested in housing, but at the end of the day they did put the development time into this and because of their decision hardly anyone will get to use it. If it turns out to be a giant waste it's because of that decision they made, not because people wanted to build houses with their friends. That's why I personally have trouble accepting some of the arguments in defense of these prices.
