Better rename Blizzard II with patch 2.1

It's really poor design if Blizzard II can be used as cross skill for CNJ/WHM/SCH/SMN when Blizzard I cannot be.

From the name, it is implied that Blizzard II requires knowledge of Blizzard I because of the numeral

Please change it to Blizzara so it doesn't confused players wondering where the heck is their Blizzard I.

Wouldn't they have to learn Blizzard 1 in order to get 2 anyways? With your statement Ara would confuse them the same since Blizzard comes before Blizzara.

Should just call it "Blizzard Entertainment", then it make sense because every one knows that, no matter what class they're playing.

I wondered why they didn't go the -a, -aga, etc route when naming more powerful versions of the spells, such as Cure, Cura, Curaga, and so on and so forth. Maybe they wanted to avoid the Stona jokes? lol

The japanese version kept the -a -ga suffixes, I would have liked for them to keep those names in the english version too since we had them in late 1.1x. It's not that big deal but yeah, hopefully HUD mods will allow us to choose between them.

Maybe giving them numbers was SE touching back to the earlier games. I think the last game that used the numbers instead of -ara/-aga was VII (Bolt 2, Bolt 3, Fire 2, Fire 3, etc etc). Correct me if I'm wrong, I only played through VIII once.

Seeing as these are cross class skill and people will have to use a thaumaturge to unlock blizzard II, this will never be the case...

I, II, and III spells predate the -a and -aga evolution.. maybe thats why? It's less confusing for the uninitiated as well.

We went through this during Beta 3. The reason they went with I, II and III was...well, there are several reasons. Yes, it's simpler for the uninitiated, but also that -ara, -aga and -aja are all nonsense suffixes that really have no meaning. And because of that, there's really no consistency between the naming schemes. I believe Fern was talking about how MOST spells follow the -ara, -aga and -aja naming pattern, but then when you get to materia, they go -ara, -aja, etc.

Basically, it's a confusing mess for them to try localizing, so they simplified the entire concept.

Pretty sure the base/ra/ga/ja is how they always were in Final Fantasy games, but you got limited space in English. For examle FF4 you can only fit 5 letters in there and even 'Boltaga' would be too long, let along 'Thundaga'. As pointed out there's no inherent meaning to these suffixes though it's also problematic with numbers, like you'd think Fire 2 is better than Fire 1, but they're not even the same type of spell (AE versus single target). Honestly it'd have made more sense just to have unique names.
