    Steam OS FFXIV Install?

whats up guys, i've been looking at installing this Steam OS onto my computer, my only issue, does anyone know if it will let me install FFXIV via disc, i know its runs off a linux based OS, so was just wondering would it be wise to do it, i don't want any major hiccups that won't let me install it right before 2.1.

    Thanks ^*

There is no official Linux version of FFXIV:ARR, though some people have reported success running it on WINE.

However, I have no idea if/how WINE works on SteamOS and unless you have a lot of experience running Linux-based operating systems I would not recommend going down that road.

Even then, it won't be supported by SteamOS unless Square releases a Linux version of the game.

Not every Steam game magically runs on SteamOS, this is well documented. Valve is betting on the fact that by creating a Game-specific Linux OS more developers will port/develop games for the platform, but they can't force it or do it themselves for games from other developers.

So it may not run on a steam box then? I was under the impression the steam box will play all steam games.

I guess I should clarify a bit. You will not be able to NATIVELY run Windows games on a machine running SteamOS. Steam has said they will be updating SteamOS sometime in the future to allow you to "stream" games from your Windows-PC to the SteamOS, but how well this will work with high end games is still anyone's guess. I imagine that Valve must have faith in the idea because they believe it can work and, if that's the case, then I have faith in them to figure it out. But for now and the foreseeable future, you cannot run Windows-PC based games on SteamOS.

Directly from the SteamOS FAQ: "SteamOS is based on Debian GNU/Linux and is not compatible with Microsoft Windows games and applications. However, SteamOS will soon support seamlessly streaming your games from your Windows computer; watch this page for more information about the In-Home Streaming Beta.

You can also look here for a list of games that WILL run on SteamOS (and most other versions of Linux as well): http://store.steampowered.com/browse...?snr=1_4_4__12
