Well I hope it ends up alittle better than junk. Treasure maps was an really fun event in another MMORPG I played. But because there's only a 18 hour limit on getting them, it worries me it'll be ruined before it even gets off the ground. The great thing about maps in the other game was that they were tiered at 5 levels, with the most difficult tier being extremely rare to find(various methods to obtaining them)and certainly far beyond any measly 18 hour lockouts. The result of these maps were challenging content for your tiered progression with rewards to match all other end game gear, or at worse be a tier under the best. I forget the finer details. As things stand here, there will be what? Maybe thousands of maps farmed every day? Depends how many gatherers are around on your server, and how many will skip using them. Doesn't look so hot for gatherer profit, nor profit in the form of gear you can use.

Just seems like it's going to be yet another event SE thinks up(or rips off but that's ok) but falls very short of being fun and meaningful because SE just can't seem to get the MMORPG thing right. As well as FFXI did in the grand scheme of things, SE just was never able to adjust to the MMORPG way of things, striking that balance that other MMOs had to do because they didn't have the Final Fantasy franchise attached to their name. As a result the players, update after update, would learn well what the Picard double facepalm was, if they didn't already know. I see that we may have a repeat here at FFXIV...
