Perhaps you should resub and see what you remember so fondly because I used to say the same thing. FFXI has an amazing story that felt like I accomplished something, I played for 8 years and loved it. A few months ago I resubbed and made a new character, using my old gil I funded my gear and lvled(which is extremely easy now) to 85 and flew through the main story and some expansions. It is not even close to how epic I remembered.

Im not saying ffxiv doesn't have fetch quests, every rpg in history has them but maybe you forget getting lizard eggs for the president of bastok after a few dozen hours of gameplay. Where in the same time frame for ffxiv you are well into a story that continues to flow instead of stopping you because the content is extremely difficult and there was no form of duty finder. Most old school players didn't even finish the expansion storylines.

You know how hard it was to find people who were willing to finish RoZ after doing divine might for the reward? when ToAU was out alexander was extremely hard and the game requires class stacking for most fights. the end reward was not worth it so most didn't bother on my server.
