I've seen some debate on transportation in some older threads and thought I'd bring out my own ideas for this. Don't hate my post right off. Read it all the way and maybe share some changes with my ideas or add your own here.
Okay, I'll probably get hate here, but I think the current teleport system in affect should be completely abolished. I haven't seen all of the storyline yet, but if teleporting has no part in the storyline then getting rid of it will be easy. I personally think that teleporting makes getting around way too easy. I love a vast world, which SE has given us with FFXIV compared to FFXI. I also love journeying. I find myself walking on FFXIV more than teleporting anyway, and sometimes when I'm journeying to a specific place I'll stop in an area and start something completely different, something I wouldn't have thought to do otherwise if I teleported.
I think Chocobos, once implemented, should be our number one source of travel. And I'm sure it will be anyway, even with being able to teleport on a whim, just for the fact that people love riding Chocobos. On FFXI I'd rent a Chocobo just for the sake of renting it with no other goals in mind, even when the cost of a Chocobo would reach 6k gil in the old days.
For party-oriented play, I do have an idea for a type of system for getting around. I'm not sure right now if you can invite from afar, haven't tried or been in a circumstance where it would be needed (but I'm sure it's not possible), so if that could be implemented, when it is add like a summoning system for party members. The leader should have an option under the party interface to summon a specific character, or the whole party, to the spot they are at. It would make getting together after creating a party much easier than having to wait on everyone to run there. Or (this just occurred to me as typing) have the current teleport system be used by party leaders only to teleport their party around.
For those who absolutely don't like walking, even with a Chocobo, maybe have some kind of taxi service in town that will take players between city-states.
Well, these are just a few ideas. Not too in depth as I've seen some people's posts, but it's a good start I suppose.
