Are there Phoenix Down(s) in FFXIV ?

or an alternative method of reviving than waiting on another player to happen along and administer it (because that never ever happens).

No. There are no phoenix downs and the only way is to hope a player with Raise (CNJ) or Ressurection (ACN) prepared as a cross-class comes along. Fortunately, you can still shout/yell in the area you died, so it is possible to find a raise that way.

Shoki is right - there actually are Phoenix Downs in FFXIV - they're classed as unique items though, that you can only use on a KO'd character outside of battle (you can only hold one at a time in your inventory, but by hiring two retainers you can keep two more - one on each). At the moment the player can only aquire three as optional rewards from three specific sidequests, the first from Quarrymill, the second from Camp Skull Valley and the third from the Ceruleum Processing Plant.

Other than that, the only way you can revive a KO'd player is to equip the CNJ spell Raise as a cross class ability which is learned at level 12 (ACN also learns a similar spell called Resurrection, but that can't be used cross-class).

use this in your chat box "/shout rez <pos>" someone usually will answer and come revive you, if not it was worth a shot

I will add that the penalties for returning are fairly minimal. Just take care to set your homepoint nearby when doing anything dangerous.

    "/shout rez <pos> please"

I wouldn't go out of my way without the magic word unless you just died in front of me

You do know there's a new achievement coming in 2.1 called 'The Kindness of Strangers', based around reviving KO'd players who aren't on your Friend List or in your ls/FC? I make a point of raising people I see KO'd anyway without expecting a reward, but the achievement would be a nice acknowledgement of it.

There are phoenix downs, I have one. I think they are just a fan item(Unique and Untradable i believe) as they can only be used once outside of battle and you can only carry 1 at a time. Also I think you can only get them from certain quests around lvl 48 or so.

For those prefering the official database (funny how many people still ignores the Lodestone / Eorzea Database / Libra Eorzea app on Adnroid & iOS):

    Phoenix Down

@Enkidoh: As per above there seems to be actually 4 quests - hence the note about preferring the official database as that should be most up to date all the time. Nothing agains imdb or many other usefull FF / ARR sites out there but it shuld be always worth checking the official info where ever available and link to it here in the (official) forums as well (in conjuction with other sourcess indeed if deemed neccessary).

In regards of the raise shouts - I actually tend to ingnore those using "rez" or "plz" - if you lazy enough to type in a coherent sentence (it's not like you have no time for that while dead anyway) I tend to not bother - sorry. It's not THAT much extra effort to type the whole "raise" and "please" and / or use autotranslate or set ut macro for that as well.
