    In-depth game manual?

    Hey,

So I started playing the other day and I really am not too sure what I am doing though am slowly learning as I go along. Is there a manual of sorts for this game? The one that came with my DVD is basically install instructions, there is nothing on the official website, there is nothing I can find in game, and the lodestone site - while helpful - provides only basic information at best. And this is really frustrating me as it just seems like I am merely guessing what to do next.

If you are still reading by this point and want to give me tips in this thread, I am stuck with weapons.

I went to some guy and got my first guildleve quest. It involves going to kill three rats. My problem is I have no idea how to win as I have no weapon.

The only "weapon" I have is a rock to throw. And that does two damage. And these rats do something like 36 damage per attack. I'm not even sure if I'm doing it right - I click the rat, hit the 1 key on the keyboard.

So okay I don't have any weapons. Maybe I can craft one? My specialty is woodworking. Though looking up the level 1 to 10 recipes on the lodestone site, I don't seem to be able to make weapons. Maybe I can buy one? I go to the traders in town but can't find any for sale. Maybe I can find one? Nope not yet.

So sorry for such a noob question though how do I progress?

Your problem is that you're trying to fight as a Carpenter. All crafting and gathering classes have almost no combat ability, although they can use Wrist Flick to cause their next Throw Stone to stun for escaping.

As a Carpenter, you can do local leves and non-combat sidequests (there are quite a few), or even go explore the world on foot if you're careful. Even so, you will want to pick a fighting class, either a Discipline of War or of Magic, and pick up its starting weapon. As vax says, NPCs sell these in every city, and they cost around 1k gil if I recall correctly.

You should also get familiar with Yellow Gremlin, a very detailed third-party database. The link below will list all the weathered weapons and the NPCs that sell them. Click on the NPC name to see their location and find the one in your starting city.

Hey guys thanks for the reply. I only have about 250 gil so can't afford much. I just picked the "My very first adventure" guildleve so thought I must be doing something horribly wrong if I can't pass that quest. I will go focus on the other non-combat quests until I have enough gil then buy a weapon.

Thanks for your help guys and thanks for the links.

I'm sorry but I still have absolutely no idea what to do.

I went and picked up the Logging Bearded Rock guildleve. I have to go and collect samples from three trees. I read up on the guides and this is what it says:

    How to Log
    1. Use the Arbor Call ability to search for nearby mature trees.
    2. Follow the Arbor Call results to approach a mature tree, and select the Log option when it appears in the system menu.
    3. The logging process will now begin.

Problem is, due to a lack of information, I have no idea how to even get to the abilities menu, whether I even have this Arbor Call ability, etc. Every search I do brings up what abilities I can use, but not HOW to use them. Even when approaching "sparkling / shining" trees to log them, there is no log option on the main menu. Even a search of the Internet with the guildleve I'm doing brings up nothing more than a screenshot of the card I am doing.

I really don't want to give up on this game though I am so lost. There is plenty of information out there sure. But it seems there is no information for people who don't even know their way around yet, and this is very frustrating.

Just as a side note I finish about 20 games a year, a few of them RPGs, so I am not new to gaming. I am just absolutely, completely lost as to what to do because every FAQ or guide I come across seems to assume I know basic things - which I don't yet - because there is, well, no manual and no in-game tutorial that I can find.

you need to be on botanist to do that quest. Talk to the other npc behind the counter where you got these quests, that person will give you quests for carpenter so you can make some gil to buy other weapons and tools

Have you finished the first main storyline quest for Limsa Lominsa? "Treasures of the Main" gives 11k gil.

You could also try asking for help if there's anyone in Limsa. Most people I know would be happy to get you started.

Check the Play Guide on Lodestone. The links are on the left column.

So here's the basic idea -- In FFXIV, if you want to play as a certain class, you equip the weapon/tool of that class. If you want to be a Carpenter, you equip a saw and you're a Carpenter. If you want to be a Marauder, you equip an axe and you're a Marauder. If you want to be a Miner, you equip a pickaxe and you're a Miner.

In order to complete "Fieldcraft" leves, you have to buy and equip the appropriate fieldcraft tool. In order to complete "Battlecraft" leves, you have to buy and equip a weapon. And in order to complete local (crafting) leves, you have to buy and equip the tool for that particular craft (a needle, a saw, a hammer, etc.)

Check out that Yellow Gremlin site to figure out where to buy "weathered" (i.e., rank 1) tools and weapons in your city. Then, buy a weapon, pick up some tutorial leves, go to the appropriate camp, equip the weapon, and run those leves.
Problem is, due to a lack of information, I have no idea how to even get to the abilities menu, whether I even have this Arbor Call ability, etc.
Open your main menu, and go to "Actions and Abilities." After you've equipped a botanist's tool, you'll be able to select Botanist abilities to place on your action bar.

Welcome to the game, and good luck!
