First off I'll say this.. Anyone thinking that SE is gonna implement Open World PvP without restrictions is absolutely from another planet. There is no way SE will implement the ability to allow people to grief or gank others in FFXIV. No way, never so you might as well stop talking about it.

I'm def fall in line with the idea of an arena to battle it out with others who 'decide' on their own the want to take part. Whether through a tournament or something similiar. A tournament would be a great idea as it would show whos top dog on each server and people will flock to take their place. Something like this would be a lot of fun. It just one of those things thats hard to do right, as the mechanics with abilities are far different between PvP and PvE in general and any balance toward PvP taken away from PvE means that PvE will suffer, which means the game will suffer.

Also... PvE is NOT Player v. Enemy.. it's Player v. Environment... jus say'n

It has a bonding quality to it, which is why people like mmos, the interaction with other living, breathing individuals.
Just curious, other then WoW, the other MMOs you say can't last without it, what other games are as big of a hit as WoW with PvP? I know Aion has it...pretty much dead game. Rift has it...same. So for your "modern MMOS" that have it make them great or survive, those two hits have come and gone.

There's nothing in getting ganked in a MMO that helps people "bond." It pisses them off. Bonding takes place when you actually talk to people, help them when they ask if you can or just a random drive by cure or Stone Skin while a noob or other player is ranking up a new character. That strengthens bonds. That and an active LS and solid party functions such as search to help people find each other who DO want to PT up.

As for my opinion on PvP... oh guess what, don't care. If it's like something Snow Tiger devised sure. Or just as it was in FFXI. I don't want to be forced into some BS because PvP players want run around all day /shout in chat stroking their epeens.

    Edit:

Certain players would hang out in specific areas and never leave, just griefing people trying to actually progress.
This is exaclty what I was talking about. Left Aion because we would be in 30-40+ leveled PTs having assholes from the other faction just waiting in those areas while we all tried to accomplish missions. Fuck that. You wanna PvP, go play a FPS. Then show some skill against someone just as evenly powered as you. Then it's all skill and timing from there.

I think some competitive play is good as it will help the players to progress. Just don't overdo it

Ganking is no fun, and I'm sure PvP in FFXIV will never allow it.

I think the Armoury System in FFXIV could allow for some engaging 1-on-1 PvP that just wouldn't be possible in the rigid job-system found in FFXI. There's a lot of opportunity for some creative builds with all the traits and abilities you could possibly throw together. Even being able to set attributes could provide some unexpected advantages.

There is lots of fun ways for team PvP. Can call it PvP Ops
    capture the flag
    capture enemy base
assassination (one player is main target and rest of team mates must protect him/her in a certain area)
    ballista style pvp

Then we can have Large scale PvE
grand companies against the forces of the Empire and Ishgard

    Large scale PvPvE:
Ballista style PvP but with NPC enemies as well. Including the Empire and their machines.

I can go on and on. The fun is there to be had. You just can't be scared about it. I trust the FFXIV dev team, and I'm sure they wont let us down. When Ballista in FFXI was hot, it was the only in game event I enjoyed the most. I can think of only one reason why its not popular now, and that is a lack of dev support, and lack-luster rewards.

I would love a nice competitive PvP scene, especially if it could be organised into proper tournaments automatically and so forth..

And being able to duel and stuff would be nice and all, maybe even some faction warfare.. though I agree with that post early on, something like RO's War of Empirium would be awesome, too. Although.. yeah, free open world would be a bit.. >.>

Not that it wouldn't work, though.. if it were done right. But getting it right.. god knows how to do that.

Not really a big fan of PVP though as many have said, a system like XI would be good.

The big draw to XI and XIV to me was the community and relationships I build / built while playing and the teamwork PVE aspect. I personally do not need to test myself against other people. That's what other games are for.

    just my 2 gil.
