Targeting in this game sucks especially on Controller

Why is the Targeting so backward in this game? It make it almost impossible to play as a Tank. Right now how Targeting work is that it Target the furthest mob away first then closest.

There is so many times it take nearly 10 seconds to Target the mob closest to me because it cycle the mob all the way back first. There is time when Tank need to Target fast such as Coil Turn 1 for split, it target a damn slime furthest away, or Turn 4 where I try to Target the Jagger Machine and it Target the Soldier and Knight instead all the way back, and it go after the healer and one shot him >.<. I can't even cycle the Knight and Soldier right next to me, it go to the other Knight and Soldier where the Off Tank Tank it

Why can't Targeting be priority where it Target the closet Mob first or the Mob you attack first or closest to you? Why does it have to be backward making it more frustrating? Is SE gonna do something about this like having an option to target mob nearest first or mob that attack you in setting? This is so frustrating to play as Tank when targeting is so crucial. I know Keyboard and Mouse people don't have this problem, but try with Controller or Tab Targeting as a Tank and you will see it absolutely horrible and so broken, make me want to quit playing a Tank.

The targeting system rotates target based on how many enemies are appearing on your screen.

So, the trick is, just look down on the ground, limiting your view range to only the monsters you could see on your screen is the only way to work around it.

Back to your point, yes, I do think it is a problem that it is not targeting at the nearest target. I do hope they change it in the future.

fwiw they said they are working on making it easier (switching the priority around like you said), and they are working on a method for us to tab up and down on the enemy list.

It's still kind of frustrating even with keyboard and mouse, and especially while tanking. Clicking on things is a bit of a hassle given that everything seems to have a weirdly large hitbox and targets in motion don't really do well with clicking, so I find myself frantically tabbing and pivoting my camera so that there's as little in my view range as possible. When DPSing or healing I have enough time to tab through targets or shift-tab if I overshoot the one I want, but depending on the encounter it's not optimal as a tank.

Overall, it doesn't really limit me too much in my gameplay but it's a problem that I agree shouldn't exist. Hopefully it'll be changed sooner rather than later.

I have mine set up so that it targets only mobs that are engaged. Then it's usually only a click or two to get the mob I want.

the controller for this game is pretty bad in general honestly. i miss the pc bar setup for my controller and the fully customizable keys more and more each day.

I don't play tank but i usually don't have any trouble with targeting. I play SCH and DRG.

Play with PS3 controller on emulater.
To cycle through mobs i hold down R2 (button that pulls up my right macro pallet) or L2 and tap R1 or L1 to cycle left or right. This targets only enemies.

just something to try because i use it and can change targets fast and efficiently with it.

There are some pretty good custom targeting tools. And also, default targeting is based on direction rather than distance. You can be right next to a mob, but facing a little to the side, and you will target a mob that is more directly in front of you, even if it's farther away.

controller works way better. you just dont know how to use it.
you can do anything the M&KB can do

active crossbar x360 controller: LB & RB = tab left & right
inactive crossbar: LB + a,b,y,x change targeting modes.
d-pad left & right: change mob focus hit a to accept or use skill then move d-pad for sub target.
d-pad up & down: like above but change party focus.

I have come to like playing and targetting with my FFXIV Controller much more than my KB+M. It just takes a bit of practice, but once muscle memory takes over, Gamepad targetting is pretty nice ^^
