For normal dungeons you don't really need it, but for progression fights it really helps. Once people are comfortable with the dungeon and everyone knows their role it becomes less important.
I'd suggest downloading TS to have just in case. On a side note. I find it much more entertaining to be able to talk with members of my coil static without having to type on a keyboard.
Yeah, basically the first main reason people use them is so they can explain the fight without having to type everything out, other then that sometimes its nice having someone just telling people what to so as the fight goes. Really don't need them for dungeons, mostly just for coil. And mostly just for turn 5 I feel, but I can see pug groups or newer groups using it often for all 5 turns.
I don't think SE is going to support voice chat themselves due to the bandwidth consumption involved. It's really not necessary if you know what you're doing. We have a PS3 player without VOIP and knows exactly what he needs to do in Binding Coil and executes his role just fine. Is it convenient? Hell yes. Mandatory? Probably not.
It's not necessary at least in this game.
If we are filling a slot for our raid group, we require that that person has Vent... that is just us. You do not have to be able to talk, but you need to be able to listen to instructions. It never hurts to have Vent, TS3 and mumble installed so you are able to communicate. Just makes things easier.
Voice chat is not needed at all even against Twintania if everyone is experienced and know what they are doing. However, personally I would never ever raid without it, it just makes everything more fun and easier IMO. Yes I would also not take someone to coil without it, experienced or not, god mode or not, just personal preference that my group enforce.
Our Company have never used voice chat. I lead our raids each week and I trust my members to know their roles in each encounter. We're attempting Twintania tomorrow night and I will be doing the same thing I have done in all previous Turns;
I ask our members to do some of their own research before hand on Reddit, YouTube or the Forums; and spend some time doing written instructions to place in a party chat macro, both to save time during the run and so that I don't miss anything out.
It might be easier having people talk on chat, but then again this is the way we've learned and this is what we are comfortable with. A couple of people were shocked that we cleared Turn 4 our first night in there, without the use of voice chat. I think all you need are good instructions and reliable members; if you're having to shout at someone to do something mid run, something is wrong.
If atleast 1 person in the group want to use Voice Chat I use it. Everything to improve the probability of victory. If no one wants it I skip using it. It makes things easier for some people, but is not needed. I recommend it though to explain the strategies easier, but nothing that can not be done via keyboard.
