What feature would you add for more unique characters?

I feel that FFXIV doesn't have much to offer in terms of being able to make your character unique. Of course when vanity slot comes out, you can be unique in the way you look, but how about builds? I would love it if they can somehow enhance the materia system so that individuals can build their characters in a more unique way that isn't just cookie cutter.

Any suggestions?

If it was one thing for unique characters... I would have to say armor variety.
Not just vanity slots, not just A or B side grade equipment but a *large* variety of similar equipment in each tier while people would strive for BiS and Vanity would help them look the way they wanted to in approaching that you would have a lot of different looks for players.

I would like to (and hope that as the game matures this becomes possible) see 4-5 styles of equipment be in the top-equipment tier. Then another 4-5 in the next tier down. This would allow for a bit more mix-and-match to reach content minimums / stat-tiers.

In character creation, it would be nice to be able to customise body/face shape further. The current options make such a minimal change that it really make no difference which one you pick, e.g. jaw shape and muscle tone...

This. Plus I would like gender neutral clothing. The option to equip a male variant on my female character and a female variant on my male character because, sometimes I just want to wear those awesome guy pants on my girl and other times, I want to show a little more midriff on my catboy.

Also the option to have male emotes on my females, female emotes on the males. My character was designed to be more boyish but still female, I want to flex when I pose, not do super girly "look at me im so cute" crap.
